Cogne lies in the heart of Gran Paradiso National Park. In Valnontey, a hamlet of the municipality of Cogne, the Paradisia Alpine Botanical Garden is located at an altitude of 1,700 metres. The garden covers around 10,000 square metres, is home to more than 1,000 plant species and recreates natural habitats. The Tutelattiva Laboratorio Parco focuses on water, forests and pastures, as well as the relationships between wildlife and people.

The meadow of Sant’Orso near Cogne is one of the most extensive mountain meadows in Europe. At the well-known Prà Suppiaz peat bog in the Cogne Valley, typical aquatic plants as well as fish and amphibian species can be observed, including brown trout and common frogs. The Lillaz waterfalls are a popular destination for families in summer and invite visitors to enjoy a pleasant walk.
Hiking and Winter Activities
Cogne offers an extensive network of hiking trails, winter walking paths and snowshoe routes, allowing you to hike in Gran Paradiso National Park at any time of year. The Lillaz–Valeille route is an easy circular hike and leads into the wide Valeille Valley, dominated by glaciers. Cogne has 80 kilometres of cross-country ski trails with 12 circuits. A circular hike follows a closed-loop route; cross-country ski trails are designed for Nordic skiing.
There are more than 150 icefalls in the Cogne Valley, attracting ice climbers from all over Europe. Ice climbing is a form of winter mountaineering on frozen waterfalls. Guided tours are offered at the Costa del Pino Mine. When visiting the Costa del Pino Mine, you wear a helmet with a headlamp and enter the interior of the mountain. Guided tours of the Paradisia Alpine Botanical Garden are offered daily at set times; you can also visit the garden independently.
History, Exhibitions and Events
The Maison Gérard-Dayné is a traditional rural house in the Aosta Valley, built of wood and stone; its history is documented in 17th-century records. The house was built in 1670 by the Jay or Gex family. The Maison de Cogne Gérard-Dayné houses an ethnographic museum with agricultural tools, everyday objects and traditional costumes.
Cogne has a permanent exhibition on Cogne’s traditional bobbin lace and a permanent exhibition featuring wooden sculptures by the artist Dorino Ouvrier. The Lou Tintamaro folklore and choir group performs in the original traditional costume, with accordions and drums decorated with colourful ribbons and bells. The Gran Paradiso Film Festival takes place in Cogne, in the valleys of Gran Paradiso and online, and mainly presents wildlife films. In 2026, the 29th edition of the Gran Paradiso Film Festival was held as part of a tradition spanning more than 40 years.

Seupetta de Cogne is a traditional soup made with rice, bread, Fontina, butter and spices. Crema di Cogne is prepared with cream, eggs and chocolate. Cantine Gourmet offers a mobile tasting experience dedicated to the winemaking tradition of the Aosta Valley and the typical dishes of Cogne.
For getting around without a car, Cogne offers a free bus service. Gran Paradiso Bike is a regularly held 40-kilometre mountain bike race associated with Cogne.
