Winter sports between Brusson and Estoul
Brusson lies at an altitude of more than 1,300 metres, surrounded by mountain peaks, forests and meadows. For planning winter sports activities, the slopes in Estoul and between Brusson and Estoul are the main focus. At the Estoul–Palasinaz resort, the winter sports area between 1,700 and 2,000 metres above sea level has several ski lifts and 15 kilometres of slopes of varying difficulty. Between Brusson and Estoul, there are a total of 60 kilometres of slopes for all ability levels.
In this context, a ski resort refers to the area with lifts and slopes. Different difficulty levels classify descents according to their technical demands, while the designation “for all ability levels” describes the broad range of the slope offering. For orientation in the town, the Foyer du Fond is located near Brusson’s oldest historic centre. It provides winter sports enthusiasts with changing rooms, showers, ski-waxing rooms and a fitness room.
Lakes and Trails in the Mountain Landscape
Lago di Brusson is an artificial lake and a tourist reserve. It is located in the main village of Brusson and can be reached by car. The area around Lago di Brusson includes a large playground with tables and benches, a beach volleyball court and a sunbathing lawn. Alongside the water, the lake therefore offers clearly designated areas for relaxing and physical activity.
The Laghi della Battaglia Palasinaz can be reached on foot from the hamlet of Estoul via farm tracks and mountain trails. From Estoul, the Laghi di Palasinaz can be reached on foot in about two and a half hours via the marked routes 5 and 4.
Culture and Local History
Castello di Graines dates from a period before 1263. It is located on the summit of a rocky outcrop at the entrance to the Vallone di Freudière. Its position made it possible to control the entire Val d’Ayas and access to the upper Valle di Gressoney.
The Chamousira Fenilliaz Mine is considered the most important gold mine in the Aosta Valley. The Brusson gold mine was discovered in 1899 and operated from 1900 until the end of the 1980s.
The Church of San Maurizio dates back to the 15th century and was rebuilt between 1870 and 1873. The parish church of San Maurizio preserves 18th-century wood-carved, painted and gilded altars, as well as sacred art objects.
Casa Yonzo was a rural building with rooms for family life and agropastoral activities. The building also included a workshop, a shop and a room used by the Congregazione di carità . Casa Yonzo’s most distinctive architectural feature is a covered courtyard surmounted by a wooden balcony gallery. Casa Yonzo was recently restored and is now home to the municipal library of Brusson.
