Rotterode lies on the southern slope of the 600 m-high Rotteroder Höhe. A specific point of reference for planning your visit and tours is the “Rennsteig-Leiter Rotterode” hike: it leads through the Mossbachtal valley to the Rennsteig. In winter, the same route is also groomed as a ski trail.

The route through the seasons

Hiking and ski touring offer two seasonal perspectives on a named route. When choosing a tour for your stay, you can follow the route through the Mossbachtal valley to the Rennsteig. For winter plans, the fact that it is groomed as a ski trail is also relevant. Before your visit, check whether the route is currently groomed.

The name “Rennsteig-Leiter Rotterode” and the stated destination help put this hike into context: it is a route through the Mossbachtal valley to the Rennsteig. This information describes a specific route and its winter use as a ski trail.

Rotterode is said to have been founded after the destruction of Moosburg in the early 14th century.
