Neustadt am Rennsteig is situated at an elevation of 805 metres above sea level on the Rennsteig and is nestled within the Thuringian Forest UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The landscape is characterised by blooming mountain meadows, clear streams and forests, complemented by views across valleys, wooded areas and mountain ridges.
The Große Burgberg, Morast and Fürstenberg mountains are located in the immediate vicinity of Neustadt am Rennsteig. The Schmiedtswiesenkopf is situated in the surrounding area.

The Rennsteig long-distance hiking trail runs through Neustadt am Rennsteig, making the town a starting point for hikes and extended walks. The documented history of Neustadt am Rennsteig goes back more than 530 years. Until 1923, the Rennsteig marked the former border between the Duchy of Saxe-Meiningen and the Principality of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen.
