When planning a stay in Herschdorf, hiking routes, mountain bike tours, and the Church of the Lamb of God offer different ways to shape your visit. If you are looking for accommodation, you can first consider whether hiking, cycling, or local history will be the focus of your stay. The routes differ in their described courses: alongside a circuit to the Lange-Berg-Denkmal, there are routes heading toward other places.

Hiking on the Long Mountain

The suggested circular trail to the Lange-Berg-Denkmal starts at the Langer Berg hiking car park in Herschdorf. From there, it follows the yellow trail markers to the monument at an elevation of 809 m. The return route follows the Panoramaweg to the Herschdorf hiking car park. The circuit is approximately 6 km in total. This distance therefore includes both the route to the monument and the return journey.

Three hiking car parks are located in Herschdorf and Willmersdorf, right on the Long Mountain. The circular trail offers a specific route idea, while other hiking suggestions connect Herschdorf with different directions and further trails. When planning, you can distinguish between a circuit with a described starting point and return, and a route heading toward another place.

More trails and directions

The Pilzsteig leads from Herschdorf in the direction of Neustadt am Rennsteig. The Thuringian Nature Park Route passes through Herschdorf; viewpoints are the reason for this route. Another suggested hiking trail leads from Herschdorf via Dröbischau toward Barigau and follows the hiking trail signs. The routes therefore have different focuses: the circuit to the monument has a named starting point, destination, and return route, while the other trails are described mainly by their direction or course.

Mountain biking and the Wichelpfad

Mountain bike tours of varying difficulty are possible on unmarked trails around Herschdorf.

The Wichelpfad between Herschdorf and Gillersdorf is suitable for families with children.

Großbreitenbach as a broader travel destination

Within the broader travel destination of Großbreitenbach, the town extends across a plateau between the Long Mountain, the Schwarza Valley, and the Rennsteig high-altitude hiking trail.

Großbreitenbach is home to St. Trinitatis Church. It has 600 seats and is the largest half-timbered church in Thuringia. Construction began in 1679 as a replacement for the dilapidated St. John’s Church, which had been built in 1570 and collapsed, apart from its church tower, between 1771 and 1771. St. Trinitatis Church was built according to the plans of Andreas Rudolphi, the regional master builder of Saxe-Gotha, and consecrated in 1690.

The church is entirely clad in slate. A striking hexagonal roof turret sits atop the steep roof of the wide nave. The wooden baptismal stand also has its own history: it dates from 1677 and was transferred from the old St. John’s Church.
