Neustadt in Saxony is situated in the Neustadt Valley at an elevation of 300 to 585 metres above sea level. The valley is bordered by the uplands of the Hohwald and Ungerberg. At the same time, the town lies between Dresden, Saxon Switzerland National Park and the Upper Lusatian Highlands.

Finding a hotel in Neustadt in Saxony is one way to plan your stay directly in the town.

History

Neustadt was first mentioned in official records in 1333 and was founded as a gold-mining town by miners from Freiberg. A 300-year-old town hall stands in the historic market area. Nearby, a post column dating from 1729 commemorates the historical significance of the town; a bronze fountain in the market square commemorates the cattle markets held there for centuries.

The Protestant St. James Church preserves a fully intact late Gothic choir dating from the 15th century. The historic rectory near St. James is Neustadt's oldest building and was the workplace of pastor and local historian Wilhelm Leberecht Götzinger.

Culture

In Langburkersdorf stands the former Hofmühle Langburkersdorf watermill, which has been opened to the public as a historic building. Langburkersdorf Castle contains restored painted ceiling elements from the 17th century, which visitors can admire. The castle also has an event room for events, concerts and cultural highlights.

A guided tour of the town centre introduces visitors to Neustadt's history, anecdotes and local stories. Independently of this, the free town tour lasts about one and a half hours and starts in front of the town hall at Markt 1.

In the district of Polenz, the former servants' quarters are used for events. Flowering spring snowflake meadows are a remarkable seasonal feature there; walks through the valley are considered particularly appealing in spring.

Leisure

Arthur-Richter Park offers a central walking route with rare trees, a pond, a fountain and waterfowl. Local walking and cycling trails lead directly to the outdoor swimming lake in Neustadt and the Polenz forest swimming pool; parking is available nearby.

Neustadt in Saxony has more than 160 kilometres of developed and signposted cycle paths. Mariba Freizeitwelt adds wave pools, a large slide, whirlpools, water attractions and spa and sauna facilities to the range of activities.
