Winter Sports

Altenberg is considered the centre of winter sports in Saxony and is known as Germany's “tobogganing capital”.

Mining and History

In Altenberg and Zinnwald, museums and mining exhibition facilities offer mining-related visitor experiences and document the region's mining history.

The deposit discovered at Alten Berg in 1440 is considered the largest tin ore deposit in Central Europe. At facilities associated with the UNESCO Ore Mountain Mining Region, children can earn a miner's diploma.

The collapse of a mine in January 1620 created the Pinge, a landmark of Altenberg's mining history. Traditional Hutzen evenings and a Mettenschicht are listed as leisure activities in Altenberg.

Nature and Refreshments

Schellerhau Botanical Garden is considered a site with around 1,400 outdoor plant species, seasonal alpine flora and a nature and music sound trail. Garden, sound and herb tours are offered there on request.

The Galgenteiche ponds are among Germany's oldest artificially created ponds and reservoirs and were built as a result of mining.

Getting Around Locally

The Altenberg Tourist Information Centre is located in the former railway station at the central bus and train interchange. The former railway station also houses a cross-country ski lodge where skiers can change, use lockers and freshen up after a tour.

The children's tour through Altenberg is suitable for pushchairs and wheelchair users.

Altenberg is served by the Dresden–Heidenau–Altenberg railway line, as well as bus route 360 from Dresden Central Station and route 398 from Teplice.
