Kirnitzschtal: Nature, History and Rocky Landscapes

Kirnitzschtal combines a historic tram, paths along the Kirnitzsch, preserved mills and striking sandstone formations. During your stay, you will find a variety of points of interest here: destinations of cultural and historical significance, challenging hiking trails, opportunities for observing nature and a landscape that can also be explored by bicycle.

Historic tram: The Kirnitzschtalbahn is Germany’s only tram that enters a national park.

Flößersteig: The trail is approximately 13 kilometres long, features information boards and follows the traces of historic timber rafting.

Neumannmühle: It is the only mill in the Kirnitzschtal that has preserved approximately its original form.

Buschmühle: Its flour mill and sawmill have been unused since 1992 but are still intact; the Buschmühle was first documented in 1592.

Lichtenhain Waterfall: You can reach it by bus route 241 or the Kirnitzschtalbahn; from the stop, it is about a 3-minute walk.

Kirnitzschtalbahn and historic trails

The Kirnitzschtalbahn has been in operation since 1898 and transports hikers, tourists and spa guests to their destinations. It is therefore itself one of the defining features of the valley and combines travel through the landscape with a piece of regional transport history.

Parts of the Flößersteig can be incorporated into circular hikes in the national park. At the same time, you should take the nature of the trail into account: the Flößersteig is suitable for experienced hikers, as it is sometimes very narrow, exposed and difficult to walk. For your personal planning, it is therefore crucial whether you are looking for a challenging route or would rather connect the valley’s more easily accessible destinations.

Mills as testimonies to the valley’s history

The Neumannmühle offers several historic details within a small area. The older section was a board mill with a single-blade saw frame, has remained almost unchanged since its foundation and is at least 450 years old. The technical appearance also includes the undershot water wheel, which has a diameter of 4.80 metres. The mill therefore represents not merely a single historic name, but the connection between craftsmanship, water management and the use of the valley.

The Buschmühle also points to a long history. Its flour mill and sawmill have been unused since 1992 but remain intact; the Buschmühle was first documented in 1592.

Sandstone, gorges and viewpoints

In the upper part of the Kirnitzschtal, near Hinterhermsdorf, lies the Kirnitzsch Gorge with the Upper Lock. The “Upper Lock” boat ride can only be reached on foot in the immediate vicinity. This distinction between a scenic attraction and access to a specific offering is important when planning your day, especially if you want to combine several destinations.

A prominent destination in the valley is the Kuhstall on the Neues Wildenstein. The natural sandstone arch is approximately 11 metres high, 17 metres wide and 24 metres deep, and is one of the well-known excursion destinations in the Kirnitzschtal. The so-called Heaven’s Ladder leads through a narrow rock cleft above the Kuhstall. Metal steps take you to a small viewing platform overlooking the Bärenfang Walls and the surrounding rocky landscape. Alternatively, there is a more convenient path to the plateau, where an inn has stood since 1842.

The rocky landscape of Saxon Switzerland also includes Arnstein Rock Castle. It is also known as Ottendorf Robber Castle. There you can find stone traces of the former wooden construction, rock carvings and a deep cistern.

Historically, when the water level in the reservoir was sufficiently high, the weir at Lichtenhain Waterfall was opened. As a result, the Lichtenhain stream began to roar loudly for a short time. This former form of water spectacle is part of the history of the place; it should not be equated with a time-independent statement about a current process.

Nature observation, festival and cycle route

With a little patience and luck, you can observe white-throated dippers in the Kirnitzschtal. It is the only songbird that can dive in flowing waters. The Kirnitzschtal Festival takes place annually in the Kirnitzschtal and provides a recurring cultural highlight. Both topics complement the historic mills and rocks with nature observation and community events.

There is also a connection for a cycling tour: the Sebnitz–Kirnitzschtal cycle loop leads from Sebnitz into the Kirnitzschtal and back again. This means that the valley can be viewed not only through individual hiking destinations, but also as part of a returning cycling loop.

Practical guidance for your stay

There are only a few parking spaces available in the Kirnitzschtal. For arrival and departure, the use of buses and/or the Kirnitzschtalbahn is therefore recommended. When choosing a hotel in Kirnitzschtal, this transport situation is one of the points you should include in your personal planning. The connection to Lichtenhain Waterfall also shows that individual destinations can be reached by public transport and a short walk.

The destinations differ significantly in character and requirements: the Flößersteig requires experience, the Heaven’s Ladder leads over metal steps through a narrow rock cleft, while the alternative path to the Kuhstall plateau is more convenient. Together with the mills, waterfall, gorge, rock castle and cycle loop, this creates a varied picture of the Kirnitzschtal, without all excursions requiring the same level of physical exertion or following the same route.
