Scheibenberg is characterized by its distinctive mountain: It reaches 807.2 meters above sea level and is one of the three basalt mountains of the Ore Mountains. The mountain is considered a landmark of Scheibenberg and has a 28-meter-high observation tower. At the summit are the Organ Pipes, columns formed by cooled lava and evidence of Cenozoic volcanism; the site has the status of a National Geotope. The rocks of Scheibenberg are the remains of a lava flow around 21 million years old that filled a river valley. Their resistance to erosion left behind a table mountain through relief inversion.

Mountain and landscape

The hiking route at the summit passes the basalt columns of the Organ Pipes and the ski-jump facility, then continues along the Basalt Educational Trail and the Ottomar-Zahm Trail. The Basalt Educational Trail starts and ends at the Bergstraße Scheibenberg hiking car park. The Upper Mountain Circular Trail is a 3-kilometer, yellow-marked loop with viewpoints and views in all directions. Along 15 information panels, the Basalt Trail provides information about Scheibenberg’s geological setting, the flora and fauna of the surrounding area, and the history of the mountain and the towns of Schlettau and Scheibenberg. A tourist route on the region’s long-distance hiking trails also leads from Schlettau Castle via Scheibenberg to the Organ Pipes.

History and townscape

The square market is surrounded by a grid-like street network whose layout has been preserved to the present day. Scheibenberg’s local history museum is located at the market in a Baroque building dating from 1743. It displays tools and objects from local trades and crafts over the past two centuries; visits are arranged by appointment. Scheibenberg’s mining history has been documented at the Maria Magdalena Mine since 1478; silver veins were discovered there in 1515.

St. John’s Church features late Gothic and Baroque interior furnishings, including prayer rooms, a continuous gallery, and around 100 meters of carved wooden garlands. Anyone wishing to visit the church outside service times is asked to arrange an appointment with the parish office in advance.

Routes and regional connections

Scheibenberg lies halfway along the Ore Mountains Scenic Railway between Annaberg-Buchholz and Schwarzenberg. The geotope at Scheibenberg can be reached by car via the B101 and Bergstraße or by bus route 415 between Annaberg-Buchholz, Scheibenberg, and Aue.
