Nature
The Fuchsturm was built around 1870 by Julius Liedloff as a recreational venue and was originally called Goldene Höhe. Hiking trails reach the Fuchsturm from various directions, including the Flöhatalweg from the Flöha Valley. From the Fuchsturm, there are views across the Flöha Valley and of the meadows opposite, known as Hahnwiesen.
The forest labyrinth comprises eight activity stations. These include a barefoot trail, a forester’s pulpit, a covered resting area and a robbers’ hut with movable figures. In addition, there are ten quiz boards covering two topics.
Culture
After Seiffen, Grünhainichen is considered the second-most important center of wooden toy production in the Ore Mountains. Visitors can tour traditional workshops and wood-art manufacturers in Grünhainichen. The Erzgebirge Folk Art Museum presents regional handicrafts from the early 20th century to the present day. Exhibits include carved and turned figures, pyramids, miners, angels and wooden toys. The museum also offers a large toy shop and a dollhouse that children can play with.
The mention of a spoon maker in 1579 is considered the probably oldest evidence of wooden goods production in the Ore Mountains. The open-air music box was created by local craftsmen and arts-and-crafts workshops. A vocational school for traditional woodworking was founded in Grünhainichen in 1879; a workshop building with an assembly hall was added in 1900.
The Wendt & Kühn World presents the history and craftsmanship of the wood-figure manufacturer based in Grünhainichen in three themed areas. These include a historical exhibition with more than 600 figurative compositions, as well as demonstrations of hand-painted angels, flower children and music boxes.
In Waldkirchen, the local history exhibition presents the history of the village through documents, photographs and objects relating to schools, the Rolle Mill, the volunteer fire brigade and the church. Visits are possible year-round by prior arrangement; parking is available in front of the blue-dye works.
Cycling
The cycling tour “Along the Flöha Valley to Oederan” begins and ends at Grünhainichen-Borstendorf railway station and follows the Flöha Valley Cycle Path toward Oederan. The moderately difficult tour is 32 kilometers long, takes approximately three hours and includes 590 meters of ascent and 590 meters of descent.
