Bärenstein borders the Saxon and Bohemian ski areas on the Fichtelberg and Klínovec. At the same time, the town lies at the foot of the 898-meter-high mountain of the same name and within the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Ore Mountains/Krušnohoří.

Mountain and trails

Bärenstein Mountain is a basalt-capped mountain. Its basalt cap forms an erosional remnant of a Tertiary lava flow; a disused basalt quarry is located on its northwestern side. Bärenstein is one of the traditional holiday and recreational resorts of the Upper Ore Mountains.

Bärenstein Mountain is one of the nine peaks on the 162-kilometer Stoneman Miriquidi mountain bike tour. It is also one of the eight peaks on the 285-kilometer Kammweg Erzgebirge-Vogtland long-distance hiking trail.

The observation tower on Bärenstein was built in 1913 together with an accommodation house and is associated with panoramic views across the Upper Ore Mountains.

History and culture

The Willi ski jump on Bärenstein was built in 1921 and inaugurated on February 25, 1923. At the time, it was considered the steepest ski jump in Saxony. The last jump at the Willi ski jump took place in the winter of 1959.

The historic Bärenstein border signal stands directly on the border and symbolizes the open borders of the European Union with the message “Free passage.” In November 2025, it was restored and reinstalled at its current location.

Since 2013, exhibitions and book readings have been held at the Gemeinsame Mitte pavilion. A joint German-Czech Christmas market is held there together with Vejprty. A Saxon-Bohemian beer festival also takes place every June.

The Bohemian Brewery in Bärenstein was founded in 1858 by the brewer Wenzel Kuhn & Son from Vejprty.
