History

Elterlein grew in importance through silver mining in the second half of the 15th century. The town developed along the historic Salt Road between Halle and Prague. The waterways in Elterlein's valleys also supported hammer mills, smelters and mills from an early stage.

The former Elterlein railway station is a testament to the town's later transport and local history. Including its goods shed and ancillary buildings, it is classified as a historic railway ensemble of architectural and transport-historical significance.

Culture

St. Lawrence Church in Elterlein was consecrated in 1481. Its 57-metre-high south tower was consecrated in 1891. From the tower gallery, there are views across the landscape of the mountain ridges.

The Barbara Uttmann monument is located in Elterlein's market square.

Nature

The Hermannsdorf Meadows are considered Saxony's oldest protected area. Rare flora and fauna can be found there. In the district of Schwarzbach, the European bird sanctuary at Richterwald and the Schwarzbach Valley natural monument are also part of the local landscape.
