The Immerath Maar is a maar lake with no inflow; its water is replenished by precipitation, surface water, and groundwater. Immerath is part of the “Around the Pulvermaar” holiday region. The village has no through traffic, which contributes to its tranquillity.
Nature
The Immerath Maar covers 66 hectares. Shoreline, fen, and meadow habitats provide refuge for plants and animals. Rare birds, frogs, dragonflies, and butterflies live around the maar. It was formed approximately 40,000 to 70,000 years ago.
The Immerath Maar is Station 21 of the German Volcano Route. Swimming and other water sports are prohibited in the nature reserve at the maar. A nearby shelter provides refuge in bad weather.
Trails and Activities
The Wendelinus hiking trail loops around Immerath for approximately 12 kilometres and leads to several viewpoints. It follows historic mill paths through Eifel forests and reaches sections of the Üßbach.
The Sensory Trail in and around Immerath has 15 stations. Fishing is permitted at the Immerath Maar with a fishing licence.
Culture and History
The Trinity Chapel is Immerath’s landmark and offers views over the village in the maar basin.
The former school and bakehouse houses two functioning ovens and a school museum. The Immerath School Museum is located in a historic half-timbered building dating from 1770, which served as a school until 1910.
During processions, the village community follows a Way of the Cross with stone stations to the Trinity Chapel, accompanied by music.
