Landscape

At the Eifel-Blick Kreuzberg viewpoint, a sweeping view opens up from 516 meters above sea level across the Eifel landscape to the hills of the Hunsrück. Kreuzberg is a tuff and sand volcano from the Cenozoic Era. Together with Hummerich, it forms the northern boundary of the Schönbach Valley.

Kreuzberg and Hummerich are among the older volcanoes in the Eifel and are probably well over 100,000 years old. Until the 1960s, Kreuzberg was first used as a millstone quarry and later for lava extraction. The site also contributes to preserving the Eifel cultural landscape with its characteristic flora and microorganisms.

Hiking

There are hiking tours of varying lengths and difficulty levels in the area around the Eifel-Blick Kreuzberg viewpoint. These include the moderate, 14.6-kilometer HeimatSpur Täler- und Höhenweg trail. The circular route begins and ends at the “Zum Kreuzberg” country inn in Schönbach, leads around Schönbach and Utzerath, and passes the Kreuzberg viewpoint, wooded sections, and valleys along small streams. The route is freely accessible; parking is available on Mühlenweg.

Culture and History

In the center of Schönbach, the Quirinus Chapel stands next to the community center. It was built in 1968 and features colorful ornamental arched windows, a large St. Michael’s window, and a Baroque altar more than five meters high, dedicated to Saint Quirinus and the Five Wounds.

A cross on Kreuzberg is traditionally associated with the gratitude of people who returned from the Second World War. The tradition of maintaining the cross continues to this day. Written records of Schönbach date back to 1364; Schimmich is the local dialect name for Schönbach.

The Schönbach Kirmes fair is celebrated on the first Sunday in September. It was revived in 2010 following the establishment of the Bambini volunteer fire brigade.
