Limburg-Weilburg offers a variety of reasons to travel: historic sites, art, hiking and cycling routes, water-based activities and nature destinations. When searching for accommodation, you can therefore first decide whether your stay should focus primarily on culture, outdoor activities or special excursion destinations. The following places and activities provide you with concrete guidance.

Culture and History between Limburg, Runkel and Weilburg

The Rosenhang Museum in Weilburg was established in the former August Helbig brewery. Covering around 2,000 square metres, it presents contemporary art in changing exhibitions; studios are also available for artists. Anyone wishing to combine their stay with art will find an independent cultural focus here.

In Runkel, the medieval castle, first mentioned in 1159, still shapes the townscape today. The historic Lahn Bridge from 1448 also stands there. It is one of the oldest bridges on the Lahn that have been preserved in their original condition. In Limburg, you can expect a historic half-timbered old town, considered one of the few undestroyed medieval town centres in Germany and renovated to an exemplary standard. Limburg's St George's Cathedral towers over the Lahn from a steep rock with its seven towers.

Weilburg also places a clear emphasis on history. Weilburg Palace was built on a mountain spur high above the Lahn and is one of Hesse's important cultural monuments. One of the special technical attractions is the navigable ship tunnel, which was built between 1844 and 1847. It is Germany's oldest and longest navigable shipping tunnel and, together with the cupola lock at its lower exit, forms a technical monument.

The Hadamar Memorial on the Mönchberg offers an opportunity for thoughtful engagement with history. It commemorates the victims of the National Socialist euthanasia crimes. On the Beselicher Kopf are the basilica ruins of a former Premonstratensian convent and the Beselich pilgrimage chapel. The chapel, built in 1763, was christened Maria Hilf in 1767, dedicated to the Fourteen Holy Helpers and remains a pilgrimage destination for people from the region to this day.

Hiking, Cycling and Experiences on the Water

Runkel is a starting point for various hiking and cycling experiences. The Lahn Hiking Trail runs through the area, as do the permanent hiking trails “In the Steep Slopes of the Lahn” and “Through the Kerkerbach Valley”. For cycling tours, the Lahn Cycle Route and the Kerkerbach Valley Cycle Route are available. Route Plan 1 covers 48 kilometres from Limburg through the Kerkerbach Valley and the Hessian Westerwald, via Hadamar and back to Limburg. The tour is classified as moderately difficult.

Anyone planning a longer cycling trip can consider the 245-kilometre Lahn Cycle Route, certified with four stars. The route has very good public transport connections via the Lahn Valley Railway. The specific daily itinerary depends on the chosen distance and the traveller's personal pace.

On the water, Kanustation Runkel offers canoe tours for individual travellers and groups. The tours can last one or several days; Canadian canoes and kayaks are used. Equipment, instruction and passenger transfers are also available. Special offers are available for groups and families. A canoe tour in Weilburg also allows you to pass through the only remaining navigable ship tunnel.

Nature Destinations for Different Daily Itineraries

The “Tiergarten Weilburg” wildlife park has a 400-year tradition. In a near-natural setting, visitors can observe native animal species, including bears, wolves, moose, European bison and aurochs, red deer, wild boar, ibex and mouflon. Kubach Crystal Cave is surrounded by 350-million-year-old limestone and contains numerous crystals and pearl stalactites. It is considered the only crystal cave in Germany.

The “Mensfelder Kopf” nature reserve is a European flora-fauna habitat conservation area with valuable habitats for many animal and plant species, some of them rare. Another special stop is the Selters Water Museum. During guided tours, you can taste the original Selters water from the Selters spring, known since 1536, in the Art Nouveau spring temple from 1907, the home-drinking room and the function rooms. Guided tours are available by prior arrangement.

Choosing Accommodation Based on the Reason for Your Trip

Accommodation in Limburg-Weilburg can easily be chosen based on your preferred daily programme. For a culturally oriented stay, the historic sites, museums and monuments provide useful points of reference for planning. If you mainly want to hike or cycle, the trails in Runkel, Route Plan 1 and the Lahn Cycle Route offer different route formats. For groups and families, Kanustation Runkel can be a separate component of the trip thanks to its one- or multi-day offers, equipment and passenger transfers.

This keeps trip planning open to a range of interests: One day can be devoted to Limburg's half-timbered old town or cathedral, and another to a cycling tour, a hike, a visit to a wildlife park or a museum.

For further regional orientation, you can also explore Mengerskirchen, Bad Camberg, Elbtal, BergstraĂźe, Kassel Region, Hersfeld-Rotenburg, Fulda and Marburg-Biedenkopf.
