Hersfeld-Rotenburg is a district in eastern Hesse. The area borders the districts of Werra-Meißner, Wartburgkreis, Fulda, Vogelsbergkreis and Schwalm-Eder. In terms of landscape, it features a hilly upland region associated with the Waldhessen area; this includes the Knüll Mountains, Stölzinger Mountains, Richelsdorfer Mountains and the Kuppenrhön.

Nature

Hersfeld-Rotenburg encompasses river areas, forests and geological formations, as well as the winding Fulda, more than 190 natural monuments and several designated nature reserves. The district's hiking landscape includes rolling hills, forests, valleys, the Knüll Mountains and the Fulda; easy hikes are generally described as having gentle inclines.

In the immediate vicinity of Hersfeld-Rotenburg are Wehneberg, Hoherot and Frauenberg. Kleinberg is located in the wider regional area.

Culture and History

Cornberg Abbey was built between 1292 and 1296 as a convent for Benedictine nuns. Today, it serves as a municipal and cultural center and houses a sandstone museum. The Cornberg Sandstone Museum and the adjacent quarry showcase scientifically significant dinosaur trackway finds from the Permian Zechstein.

The Gisslingskirche ruins are located in the vicinity of Hersfeld-Rotenburg. In the surrounding area are Friedewald Castle, Ludwigseck Castle and Neuenstein Castle. Bebra's railway history includes a railway museum and an experience featuring a narrow-gauge railway.

Transport

The A7 and A4 motorways, as well as Federal Highway 27, run through the district. The Frankfurt–Göttingen railway corridor passes through the area. The larger railway stations in Bad Hersfeld and Bebra offer regional services to nearby cities.
