Nature

The Heidenhäuschen nature reserve lies southeast of Hangenmeilingen in Elbtal and covers 145.02 hectares. Heidenhäuschen is a basalt ridge with several peaks, featuring old natural beech forests, an abandoned quarry, and a block scree forest. Protected orchids and botanical rarities such as St. John's wort grow in the area.

Heuchelheim is characterized by the floodplain landscape of the Elbbach. The Elbbach near Heuchelheim is popular with sport anglers, offers quiet rest areas along the riverbank, and is protected because of its fauna and flora.

The R8 cycle path runs along this nature reserve toward Waldbrunn and Hadamar.

Culture and History

A 70 × 80 metre Celtic ring rampart from the late Hallstatt period is located on the plateau of Heidenhäuschen.

Waldmannshausen Castle is a Late Gothic stone building with three round towers, built between 1486 and 1488. The castle serves as a hostel for school classes and can accommodate organized groups. Independent travelers are not accommodated there.

The St. Nicholas Chapel in Dorchheim dates from the 12th century and contains medieval sacred paintings.

The Marienstätter Hof is a preserved former farmstead that was once operated by Marienstatt Abbey and is considered a landmark of Dorchheim. Visitors can see an oak door from 1732 there.
