Getting Here and Getting Around the District

Benninger Ried is easy to explore on foot and has its own nature trail and an observation platform. The Buxheim forest adventure trail runs for 2.7 kilometres around Buxheimer Weiher and is designed to let visitors experience nature with all their senses. In the Bannwald forest in Ottobeuren, eleven stops lead along the forest adventure trail. Each of the three examples thus has its own focus: forest ecology, a circular route around a pond, and stops in the Bannwald forest.

Architectural Heritage and Kneipp Attractions

The buildings of Unterallgäu also offer a variety of highlights. The Baroque basilica in Ottobeuren is one of the region’s important architectural monuments. The Fugger Castle in Kirchheim is home to the world-famous Cedar Hall. The former Imperial Charterhouse in Buxheim is known for its choir stalls; Mindelburg Castle in Mindelheim is also one of Unterallgäu’s important architectural monuments.

There are two different access periods to bear in mind when visiting Mindelburg Castle: the castle courtyard is accessible all year round, while the keep, which has been converted into an observation tower, is open from April to October. Check the latest visitor information before your visit. In the monastery’s east wing, the Sebastian Kneipp Museum uses more than 2,000 exhibits to document the life and work of the famous priest.
