Museums and architectural history

At the Aischgründer Carp Museum in Neustadt an der Aisch, visitors can learn more about the over 1,250-year tradition of carp farming in ten rooms. The topic connects the history of regional fishing with a speciality that also features on the town’s menus.

The Franconian Open-Air Museum in Bad Windsheim takes visitors through 700 years of everyday Franconian history. One striking building there is the Bauhofstadel: it was built between 1441 and 1444. Its late-medieval roof structure spans an interior of around 360 square metres without supports—so the space has no load-bearing supports inside. This building offers a tangible way to appreciate both the construction method and the scale of the historic interior.

Other destinations in the district include Frankenberg Castle in Weigenheim and Hoheneck Castle in Ipsheim. Both stand out for their impressive appearance. They complement the museums with historic buildings in other parts of the district.

Cycling and walking routes

The district is nestled between the Steigerwald and Frankenhöhe nature parks and is especially well suited to exploring on foot or by bike. The district-wide cycling network includes themed routes for a range of abilities—from leisurely rides to more challenging cycling. It offers not only individual routes but also a variety of cycling options to choose from.

For a route within Neustadt an der Aisch, try the NeuStadtAktivWeg: this circular route through the town centre is about two kilometres long, links points of interest and sights, and is marked with a blue “n”. It starts at the free car park at the fairground and motorhome site. For a much longer ride, take the almost 100-kilometre “vom Main zur Zenn” long-distance cycle route. It passes through the district and connects Kitzingen with Fürth. The short town-centre loop and the long-distance route therefore differ clearly in both length and geographical scale.

Franken-Therme and regional cuisine

In Bad Windsheim, the salt lake at Franken-Therme is fed with fully saturated brine. Its high salt concentration makes for a unique floating experience. This offers a different focus from the cultural and historical attractions: here, the emphasis is on experiencing the salt water rather than on buildings and exhibitions.

In Neustadt an der Aisch, Aischgründer mirror carp is one of the local specialities. It is served from September to April, for example, crisp-fried or cooked blue in a seasoned broth. In the district, the Aischgründer Carp Weeks take place every year from 1 September to 1 November at selected restaurants. The venison weeks follow each year in November, with game meat prepared in a variety of ways. Before your trip, check which restaurants are taking part and what is currently on offer.

Getting there and getting around the district

Neustadt an der Aisch is a stop on the Würzburg–Nuremberg railway line and can be reached by bus, regional express and suburban rail within the Greater Nuremberg Transport Association. Within the district, NEA Mobil takes passengers to their chosen destination if booked in advance. The services therefore differ in that NEA Mobil requires advance booking.
