Local History Museum and Architectural History in Dirlewang

The “Taverne” local history museum brings Dirlewang’s eventful past to life with numerous archaeological finds and historical exhibits. It offers two perspectives on the town’s history: the finds provide insight into its archaeological past, while the historical exhibits show other aspects of local history.

The churches and chapels in Dirlewang can also be placed in their historical context. The Catholic parish church of St. Michael is at Marktstraße 20. It dates from the second half of the 15th century and was remodeled around 1780. The Catholic Maria Trost Brotherhood Chapel at Mindelheimer Straße 14 dates back to 1696. Its nave was added at the end of the 18th century, and the chapel was remodeled in 1911.

The Catholic Chapel of St. Francis and St. George at Brunnenstraße 19 dates from around 1700. Changes are recorded for 1831 and 1936. Together, the three buildings illustrate different periods of construction and alteration: from St. Michael’s late-medieval origins to the later additions and renovations of the chapels. This allows you to distinguish the sites by their history rather than viewing them as examples from the same period.

A Refreshing Break in the Warmer Months

The footbath is located in Dirlewang on Georg-Hörterich-Weg, by the fire station. It is freely accessible and available free of charge during the warmer months. On hot summer days, it offers a welcome way to cool off.

Trails and natural sites are another focus in the Unterallgäu. The district’s cycling and hiking trails are signposted consistently, and there are also the Glückswege trails. The Benninger Ried is easy to explore on foot and has its own educational trail and an observation platform. In Bad Grönenbach, a 3.2-kilometer forest discovery trail leads through the forest ecosystem. The Buxheim Forest Discovery Trail follows a 2.7-kilometer route around Buxheimer Weiher and aims to make nature accessible to all the senses.
