Fuchsmühl lies on the eastern edge of the Steinwald Forest. If you are looking for accommodation for your stay, the Maria Hilf Pilgrimage Church, Forest Discovery Trail and forest bathing pond can help give you a sense of the place. They represent different interests: cultural history, exercise in the forest and leisure by the water. The recurring events at Hackelstein are also part of the local scene.

Maria Hilf Pilgrimage Church and its history

The Maria Hilf Pilgrimage Church has a distinctive construction history: work began in 1710, was completed in 1725, and the church was consecrated in 1726. Historically, it was a roadside church outside the town limits. Its flattened towers are considered a landmark of Fuchsmühl and give the building its striking appearance.

Another special feature is the organ built by the Klais organ-building company in Bonn. It dates from 1983.

Forest Discovery Trail: 11 stations over 4.8 kilometres

The Fuchsmühl Forest Discovery Trail is an interactive route for children and adults focused on the forest ecosystem. At its 11 stations, visitors can experience the forest with all their senses.

The route is classified as an easy hiking trail and is 4.8 kilometres long. It starts at the Forsthaus car park on Waldstraße/Hackelsteinstraße in Fuchsmühl. Allow time for the outing according to your own pace.

Forest bathing pond, campsite and cycle route

The forest bathing pond has a sunbathing lawn, play equipment, a beach volleyball court, showers and a changing room. There is also a small campsite right by the pond.

The Steinwald Cycle Route also passes directly by the forest bathing pond.

Hackelstein: Forest Christmas and historical pageant

The Forest Christmas is held at Hackelstein every year in December. In memory of the Holzschlacht, the site is also associated with a specially written historical pageant, which is performed every ten years. If you would like to plan your trip around an event, check the dates in advance.

Climbing is also permitted at Hackelstein.

Additional cultural context in Tirschenreuth

In the wider Tirschenreuth destination, the MuseumsQuartier in Tirschenreuth offers a distinct cultural focus. It combines the Upper Palatinate Fisheries Museum with six other specialised exhibitions in a former monastery. Visitors can explore almost 1,000 years of fishing and fish farming history and see local fish in four large aquariums. Special exhibitions, talks, readings and concerts are also held regularly. As event dates may vary, it is worth checking the current programme before your visit.

At the centre of Fischhofpark in Tirschenreuth are the historic Fischhof Bridge and the Fischhof, which houses the district court. The Tirschenreuth district is best known for Zoigl, the Upper Palatinate Forest’s traditional beer, and carp from the pond landscapes of the “Land of 1,000 Ponds.”
