Reichenschwand, together with its districts of Oberndorf and Leuzenberg, lies in the broad valley of the Pegnitz River. The medieval town center stretches about 400 meters from north to south, right up to the river. The old town and the Pegnitz River therefore provide a concrete starting point for finding your bearings before your trip; the sights and activities below show different sides of the town.

Old Town and Castle History

The medieval town center is home to the so-called Second Furtenbach Castle. The history of Reichenschwand Castle includes another precisely dated milestone: in 1832, Stansky had the castle remodeled. It is the only castle in the Nürnberger Land preserved in the Neo-Gothic style. Across the Pegnitz from Reichenschwand’s old town is also the site of the former moated castle of the Lords of Strahlenfels.

Reichenschwand Castle is part of the Dormero Schloßhotel Reichenschwand and can be rented for celebrations of all kinds. If you are interested, confirm the details with the venue. A visit to the WERNER LÖFFLER COLLECTION is possible by appointment. It brings together more than 1,300 unique, authentic chairs from three centuries. Werner Löffler has been assembling the collection since 1987. The chairs’ wide range of styles and dates makes the collection a cultural subject in its own right, alongside the castle’s history.

Route, skate park and winter ice skating

The Pegnitz Terraces Tour starts in Reichenschwand and heads south. After crossing the B14, it passes an oak grove belonging to Reichenschwand Castle. If you plan to take this route, check the trail conditions before setting out. The start in town, road crossing and oak grove provide concrete pointers to its course, but do not replace a current check of the route.

The Am Anger sports grounds have a playground with a skate park. The large skate park includes various ramps; in winter, it can be used as an ice rink. The same grounds therefore offer different activities depending on the season. Check local conditions before visiting, especially if you plan to skate there in winter.

The wider setting of the NĂĽrnberger Land

Beyond Reichenschwand, the Nürnberger Land offers a broader regional perspective. More than 3,000 kilometers of well-marked hiking trails and well-developed cycling routes, with varying levels of difficulty, run through the Nürnberger Land. One specific route in this wider travel area is “Hohenstein (634 m) – SevenSummits” in Kirchensittenbach: it is 10.1 kilometers long, with 406 meters of elevation gain and 397 meters of elevation loss.

The Fackelmann Therme Hersbruck is accessible to people with disabilities; elevators lead to the foyer, the thermal baths and, from there, to the sports and leisure pool and the sauna park. The spa offers relaxation in state-recognized therapeutic water and in a sauna area with seven saunas. At the German Shepherds’ Museum in Hersbruck, you can see clothing, equipment and crafts made by shepherds from around the world. For planning your trip in the Nürnberger Land, the Fackelmann Therme Hersbruck, with its therapeutic water and sauna area, and the German Shepherds’ Museum in Hersbruck, with its insights into shepherd culture, offer two different ideas.
