Lohr a.Main combines urban history with cycling opportunities and destinations along the Main. When choosing accommodation, it may therefore be important whether you mainly want to visit historic sites and museums, go on a cycling tour, or combine both. Notable landmarks include the listed castle complex, the Spessart Museum and the Main Cycle Route.

Castle, Museum and Lohr’s History

The listed Kurmainz Castle complex has four towers. In the former castle of the Counts of Rieneck and the Prince-Electors of Mainz, the Spessart Museum presents the cultural history of one of Germany’s largest forest regions across more than 2,000 square metres. Its motto, “People and Forest”, sums up its focus on the relationship between people and landscape. The museum explores the Spessart, its history and the people who shaped it—including Snow White and the famous mirror.

Another link to the Snow White story is Maria Sophia Margaretha Catharina von Erthal: she was born in Lohr Castle in 1725 and is considered a possible historical model for Snow White. This remains a possibility, not a confirmed identification. The Lohr Snow White also hosts a storytelling session at the Spessart Museum at 3 p.m. on the second and fourth Sunday of each month from April to October. If you plan a visit during this period, you can coordinate the session with the rest of your day’s itinerary.

Lohr’s Good Friday Procession is also part of the town’s history. It takes place every year on Good Friday, starts at St. Michael’s Church in the old town and proceeds through Lohr’s old town. Thirteen life-size groups of figures depict scenes from the Passion of Christ. In March 2026, the procession was added to the Bavarian State Register of Intangible Cultural Heritage. The listed Fishermen’s Quarter adds another distinct district to the historic townscape.

Cycling and Seasonal Trips on the Main

Lohr a.Main is on the Main Cycle Route and is a suitable starting point for a ride along the long-distance cycle route. Mountain bikers, touring cyclists and e-bike riders will also find a starting point here: Lohr is part of Bikewald Spessart’s Bike Area 1. It has forest and country tracks of varying difficulty that are mostly easy to ride. The types of routes and differences in difficulty can help you choose a tour to suit your preferences; they do not mean that all the routes have the same character.

If you would rather experience the Main from the water, you can include the Maintal-Bummler in your plans. Round trips depart from April to the end of October from the Lohr Main landing stage, between the two Main bridges. As the service is seasonal, it is worth checking the latest departure information before your visit. Cycling and a boat trip are different ways to enjoy your stay on the Main.

Landscape, Views and Leisure

Nearby is the Wöhrde, a cultural landscape close to the town of Lohr a.Main. Its described landscape includes wet meadows, tall-herb communities, springs, ponds, traditional orchards and the course of the Lohr River. This offers a different experience from the historic buildings in the old town or the themed exhibition at the Spessart Museum. From the Bayersturm tower, you can look out over Lohr’s old town and the Main, with views extending to the Spessart.

For a swim, there is the Main-Spessart-Bad in Lohr. Its listed facilities include a heated 50-metre swimming pool, a large non-swimmers’ pool, an 89-metre giant slide and a diving tower with platforms up to five metres high. The pool is another specific leisure option alongside culture and cycling. The Lohr School Museum offers a different perspective on history, illustrating the history of schooling over the past century with historic classrooms and old teaching materials. The Insulator Museum displays a collection of insulators from around the world in a former transformer hut.

Getting There and Planning Your Visit

Trains from Aschaffenburg and WĂĽrzburg run hourly from Lohr a.Main station. Check the timetable before travelling to ensure the train connection suits your plans. Lohrliner routes B and E connect the station with the Lohr central bus station (ZOB); from there, it is a five-minute walk to the Spessart Museum. This walking time refers to the museum, not to other destinations in town.

For cultural events, Stadthalle Lohr also offers concerts, theatre, comedy and shows throughout the year. Alongside the museum’s seasonal offerings and the procession held every year on Good Friday, this gives you different timeframes to consider when planning: some activities are tied to specific months or a public holiday, while others are described as year-round events.
