Scheidegg in the Allgäu offers several clearly distinct attractions: the treetop walkway at Waldwelt Skywalk, the Scheidegg Waterfalls and the Reptile Zoo. Each attraction has a different focus; the approximate walking time from the town centre is also known for the waterfalls.

Waldwelt Skywalk and tree species

The “Skywalk” treetop walkway at Waldwelt Skywalk Allgäu is located above Scheidegg in the Allgäu at an altitude of about 1,000 metres. More than 30 different tree species grow in Waldwelt; the most common is the silver fir. This gives the attraction a specific nature theme: alongside the walkway itself, the variety of tree species also helps visitors interested in forests and plants find their bearings. The prevalence of the silver fir adds a distinctive species to the overall count. Altitude and forest take centre stage here, while the gorge landscape shapes the natural experience at the waterfalls.

Scheidegg Waterfalls and Rohrach Gorge

The Scheidegg Waterfalls can be reached on foot from Scheidegg town centre in about 20 minutes. The signposted hiking trail leads out of the town centre along Bräuhausstraße and through the Rickenbach district to the entrance to the waterfalls. This makes it possible to identify both the starting point in the town centre and the route; the walking time is approximate.

The Scheidegg Waterfalls are among the “100 most beautiful geotopes in Bavaria” and are therefore one of the Free State’s outstanding natural treasures. On the descent to the waterfalls, views open up over the Rohrach Gorge, which is up to 200 metres deep. It is the largest nature reserve in the district of Lindau. The geotope designation applies to the waterfalls, while the nature reserve information refers to the Rohrach Gorge. The two facts thus describe different aspects of the landscape that you can experience during your visit.

Scheidegg Reptile Zoo

Scheidegg Reptile Zoo has more than 50 naturally designed terrariums. Crocodiles, lizards, monitor lizards, venomous and non-venomous snakes, as well as spiders and scorpions live there. During their visit, guests can explore the tropical house and the outdoor enclosure. The zoo has been privately run since it was established in 1973. Both the indoor and outdoor areas are fully accessible. The zoo therefore offers a different focus from the natural attractions: the emphasis is on different groups of animals and observing them in terrariums, the tropical house and the outdoor enclosure.

Further perspectives in the broader Lindau travel destination

The broader travel destination of Lindau also has its own attractions. The New Lighthouse in Lindau is 33 metres high and is reached via 139 steps. The Diebsturm (Thieves’ Tower) on Lindau Island was built in 1380 and for a long time marked the western end of the town fortifications. These structures offer a different perspective on the destination: the lighthouse’s height and number of steps help visitors find their bearings, while the Diebsturm is linked to the former fortifications. The examples from Lindau thus complement the themes of forest, waterfalls and wildlife that characterise Scheidegg itself.
