Winter Activities in Maierhöfen

In winter, skiers and cross-country skiers can use the Flucken and Iberg ski lifts, as well as Maierhöfen’s extensive network of cross-country trails. The local offerings therefore include both skiing and cross-country skiing. Which activity shapes your stay can be a first guide to planning your trip. You should check local operating conditions before travelling.

If you are planning a ski holiday in Maierhöfen, you can base your plans on these specifically named winter activities. The description includes both two named ski lifts and an extensive network of cross-country trails. This lets you distinguish between activities without making assumptions about options for particular ability levels or specific conditions on site.

Trails with Different Themes

With 18 family-friendly experience stations, the Kugel-Alp Trail is aimed at visitors who would like to get to know the natural and cultural landscape. The stations also explore the people who live and work there, with a focus on traditional alpine farming. Other features of the trail include a wildlife observation station about birds and mammals of the forest, as well as several balancing and play elements. The trail combines nature themes with insights into local life and work.

The Hengelesweiher loop offers a different trail idea. It starts at the Ibergzentrum and leads past the sports ground, meadows and forest towards Hengelesweiher and its species-rich nature reserve. The Reflection Trail takes a different thematic approach: it starts on the path to the labyrinth and explores the themes “Departure,” “Breath,” “Silence” and “Source of Strength” at four stations. The different descriptions can help you choose a trail based on the theme you want, without assuming a particular duration or difficulty.

The similarly named routes also have different focuses: the Kugelrundweg Maierhöfen leads to the Kugel, the highest point in the Westallgäu. The Kugel-Alp Trail, by contrast, is distinguished by its experience stations and its focus on nature, cultural landscapes and alpine farming.

The Nearby Eistobel Nature Reserve

The Eistobel Nature Reserve, around 3.5 kilometres long, is located near Maierhöfen. Cliffs up to 130 metres high frame it, and the Obere Argen cascades down the valley over several levels of terrain. The area provides a habitat for species including white-throated dippers, blue-winged damselflies and ravens, as well as mosses, ferns and horsetails. Cliffs, water and a variety of plant and animal groups give the Eistobel its own distinctive natural character.

A well-secured hiking trail runs through the gorge, with three circular hiking route options to choose from. Important for seasonal planning: the hiking trail in the Eistobel is closed in winter. This makes the excursion different from the winter activities listed for Maierhöfen. If you plan to visit the Eistobel, take this closure into account when choosing your travel dates.

Autumn Tradition and Cycling Routes

The autumn cattle drive is part of the local annual calendar: the cows are driven from the mountain pastures down to the village of Maierhöfen. It is a recurring autumn tradition; no specific dates or visitor arrangements are implied.

For cycling travellers, the Allgäu Cycling Tour and the Allgäu Cheese Route cycle route lead to or through Maierhöfen. The exact route may change, so it is advisable to check the route for your own plans. Together with the winter activities and themed trails, this offers a selection of different activities, allowing you to weigh up the most suitable travel time and focus.
