Views and Hiking Routes

The Birnbaum Water and Observation Tower stands on a forest-free ridge near Birnbaum, a district of Steinwiesen. The structure is 32 metres high and stands at an elevation of 610 metres. These two figures therefore describe different things: the height of the tower and the elevation of its location. From the observation platform, the panoramic view extends across the heights of the Franconian Forest, the Thuringian Forest and the Fichtel Mountains; on a clear day, it reaches as far as the Main Valley.

Steinwiesen also offers a clear sense of the landscape for hiking and cycling: 80 percent of the municipality is forested, and there are many developed hiking and cycling trails. Numerous hiking trails are scenic and challenging. This gives you a basis for choosing, without reducing all the trails to a single level of difficulty.

You will find a different type of route at the Ködeltalsperre reservoir near Steinwiesen. Its fully asphalted circular route is suitable for cycling and skating, as well as for wheelchair users and pushchairs. This gives you a choice of two different types of outing: hiking trails described as challenging, and an asphalted circular route for the listed activities. The Ködeltalsperre is an excursion destination in the surrounding area, not a feature of the town centre.

Railway and Swimming Facilities

The Rodach Valley Railway offers an experience aboard a historic locomotive and carriages between Steinwiesen and Nordhalben. If you are planning a trip, check the operator’s current operating dates. This lets you include the railway as a separate activity without assuming a specific day of operation.

Steinwiesen outdoor pool has a sunbathing lawn, a kiosk and a beach volleyball court. During the summer months, a heated swimming pool and a non-swimmer pool are available. The leisure pool has a different focus: indoors, there is a herbal sauna; outdoors, there is a Finnish log cabin sauna with a relaxation room, a barrel sauna, a sauna cube and a bio sauna. The outdoor pool’s swimming pools are explicitly a summer offering, while the availability of the sauna facilities may change. Check the operator’s latest information before planning your visit around them.

Landscape in the Wider Travel Destination of Kronach

In the wider travel destination of Kronach, the landscape extends beyond the Franconian Forest. The larger northeastern part of the district lies in the Franconian Forest, a densely wooded, gently rolling upland range with many valleys at elevations of around 500 to just over 700 metres. The rest of the district lies in the northern part of the Upper Main Hills. This area slopes southwest from the Franconian Forest, dropping to around 300 to 500 metres, and features varied terrain with escarpments and terraces. The changes in elevation and landscape offer a broader regional perspective than the view from the tower in Steinwiesen.

The Rennsteig also connects with the wider region: an 18-kilometre section runs through the district of Kronach. This regional route is distinct from Steinwiesen’s local hiking and cycling trails; it broadens the perspective on the travel destination without presupposing a connection to any particular local tour.

The Adventure Trail Along the Rodach

Construction work on the adventure trail along the Rodach in Steinwiesen has officially begun. The overall project is scheduled for completion in mid-2027. Take this status into account when planning your trip, and do not yet treat the trail as a completed visitor attraction.
