Nordhalben is home to valuable natural habitats that shelter rare plant and animal species. The “Durch die Bärwurzwiesen” hiking trail also passes through this landscape: it follows the Green Belt and crosses the Nordhalben Plateau, with its species-rich meadows. The FrankenwaldSteigla “Durch die Bärwurzwiesen” starts at the car park of the nature adventure pool on the edge of town. This provides a specific starting point, without implying a walking time or an assessment of trail conditions.

Another option is the Nordhalben Border Trail, an easy 4.3-kilometre hiking trail in Nordhalben. From Schloßberg, you can enjoy views of the Green Belt, neighbouring Thuringia and several valleys in the Franconian Forest. The view connects the landscape with its border history: the Nordhalben Sculpture Trail follows the old Badweg out to the Green Belt, to where the border between Bavaria and Thuringia once ran. This offers a clearly specified hiking route, a viewpoint and a themed trail to suit different interests.

The former quarry is also part of the local history of Schloßberg. It is the type locality of the trace fossil “Segmentichnus mohri”, discovered in 2010. The find site and the view are two separate aspects of the place; the information about the quarry does not indicate whether it is open to visitors.

Local History, Bobbin Lace and Art

The Nordhalben Local History Museum is located in the bobbin lace school and includes border documentation. In seven rooms arranged by theme, it displays exhibits on Nordhalben’s history, including meticulously recreated kitchen and bedroom interiors. The rooms give visitors a clear focus on local history. The International Lace Collection, an exhibition of European standing, is also housed in the bobbin lace school. As an arts and crafts institution, the school offers hobby courses to visitors; check availability before your trip.

The Nordhalben Artists’ House, also known as “Maxhaus”, was renovated to serve as a residence and workplace for artists. The Chapel of the Visitation of Mary and the Evangelical Jubilate Church are also part of the town’s history. The chapel, known locally as the Marienkapelle, welcomes visitors to look around and spend time there during the day; check opening arrangements before visiting. The Jubilate Church was built between 1925 and 1926 and renovated in 1997. Here too, check its opening status before your trip.

Excursions and Practical Information

From May to October, the cross-border network of cycling and hiking buses connects Nordhalben with excursion destinations in the surrounding Franconian-Thuringian region. Since the service is seasonal, it is advisable to check the timetable before your trip. The Rodachtal Railway offers a ride on a heritage railway through the Rodach Valley. In the district of Kronach, it runs from Steinwiesen to Nordhalben with a historic locomotive and historic carriages. Check operating dates if you would like to include the ride in your plans.
