Hikes for different time frames
The Eisenberg Geopath is an approximately nine-kilometre hike through several geological eras. Its geological focus is on different types of slate. The Slate Trail, by contrast, is a short circular route around Ludwigsstadt that takes two to four hours. Another circular route is the FrankenwaldSteigla “Finf Hiehner un en Hoahn”: The 8.2-kilometre trail starts in Steinbach an der Haide and passes the 360° panorama at “Kieferne Ficht”, Fischbachsmühle with the Burg Lauenstein confectionery, Steinbachsgrund, Forellenhof and Steinbachsmühle before returning to the starting point. The Rennsteig crosses the Ludwigsstadt area and adds another route name to the local trail descriptions. Slate, viewpoints and notable structures
At the “Vertraue Gott” slate quarry, also known as Schallersbruch, a viewing platform offers a view into the open-pit mine, which is more than 40 metres deep. Another geological point of interest is Oertelsbruch, right at the entrance to Ludwigsstadt. It features Lower Carboniferous roofing and paving slate, already described by Alexander von Humboldt, and is considered one of Bavaria’s most beautiful geotopes.
Above Lauenstein, the Thuringian Tower stands on the summit of the 678-metre-high Ratzenberg. The observation tower is 26.5 metres tall and lies just under 200 metres from the Thuringian-Bavarian state border. The railway bridge is 200 metres long and 26 metres high.
