Hiking Trails Through Pressig and Its Districts

The R 61 and the Rauher Berg-Weg R 68 both pass through Pressig, Rothenkirchen and Friedersdorf. Their stated highlights differ: the R 61 offers views of the Haßlachtal valley, while the R 68 circles Pressiger Berg. Comparing the routes lets you use their respective landscape features as a guide.

The starting points also provide practical guidance. The Kreuze-Weg R 65 begins at the car park of the natural swimming pool on the edge of Rothenkirchen. The FrankenwaldSteigla Pfaffenbergweg starts at the Rothenkirchen sports ground. These are two different starting points in the municipality of Pressig that you can take into account when planning your hike.

East of Pressig, the Eila-Weg R 67 follows a circular route; its destination is Eila’s elaborately designed slate houses. Another point of interest lies along a detour of about 300 metres in the direction of Friedersdorf: a sandstone wayside shrine with a corkscrew-shaped shaft decorated with grapevines. The inscription on its base names Johann Baderschneider, a citizen of Friedersdorf, and the year 1757.

The Natural Swimming Pool and Recreation in the Landleitenbachtal

The Rothenkirchen natural swimming pool has a swimming basin with a shallow-water area and access steps. It also has a sun terrace, a diving rock, a mud play area, a baby pool, a play stream, a playground and a large sunbathing lawn. The various areas offer options ranging from swimming and jumping to playing and relaxing on the lawn. Opening hours are seasonal; check the times before your visit.

The Landleitenbachtal in Pressig’s district of Rothenkirchen offers cycling and hiking trails, tennis courts, a youth campsite and the nature adventure pool. Historic Places and Trail Markers

Posseck is home to a Gothic fortified church with Baroque altars. The two terms refer to different stylistic periods: the church is Gothic, while the altars are Baroque. Posseck is one of the oldest places in the municipality of Pressig; its first documented mention dates back to 1180. The village thus combines a specific historical date with a building whose architecture and furnishings bring together different eras.

Another distinctive trail marker is the Hermeskreuz: the sheet-metal cutout cross of the Suffa family is flanked by two hawthorn trees. It stands about 50 metres up the road, along the hiking trail that begins at the natural swimming pool on the edge of Rothenkirchen. The sandstone wayside shrine on the detour towards Friedersdorf offers a different kind of historical marker: its design and inscription identify a motif, a person and a year.

Kronach as a Regional Setting

The broader travel destination of Kronach encompasses a variety of landscapes across the district. Its larger northeastern part extends into the Frankenwald, a densely forested, gently rounded upland range with many valleys at elevations of about 500 to just over 700 metres. The rest of the district lies in the northern part of the Upper Main Hills. This area slopes down from the Frankenwald towards the southwest, reaching about 300 to 500 metres, and features varied terrain with escarpments and terraces. These details describe the regional landscape of the Kronach district; they should not be taken as characteristics of any one hiking trail.
