Rolling Hills, the Ohe River and Viewpoints

The Ohe River flows through the rolling hills of Schöllnach on its way to the Danube. The river and the surrounding hills are among the area’s defining geographical features. Another scenic landmark is Ölberg near Schöllnach: at an elevation of 800 metres, it offers panoramic views across the Danube Valley.

Since 1966, Schöllnach has been situated on the sunny side of the 1,011-metre-high Brotjacklriegels. This elevation refers to the Brotjacklriegels; the 800 metres is the elevation of Ölberg. The two figures therefore describe different landmarks, not the elevation of Schöllnach. Together, they offer different perspectives on the area: the rolling hills and course of the Ohe, the location on the Brotjacklriegels and the panoramic views from Ölberg.

Four Hiking Routes Starting in Schöllnach

Schöllnach is the starting point for hikes on the Waldrunde, Weißensteinerrunde, Adlmanningrunde and Ohesprungrunde. These four names refer to several circular routes that share a connection to the same town, not to a single trail. If you are including hiking in your travel plans, you can consider each route separately by its own name. The clear common point of reference is their starting point in Schöllnach.

It stretches from the elevations of the Bavarian Forest across the Danube landscape, including the Isar’s confluence with the Danube, to the Gäuboden, and lies between 200 and 1,150 metres above sea level. This range describes the Deggendorfer Land as a region; it is not an elevation figure for Schöllnach.

The regional context of Deggendorf also includes the castle ruins of Natternberg and Winzer. Natternberg Castle Ruins can be reached on foot from three sides. From there, the view extends far across the Gäuboden and into the Bavarian Forest. Winzer Castle Ruins are noted for their magnificent views of the Danube Valley. These viewpoints add to the regional perspective on Deggendorf and are distinct from the local landscape features of Schöllnach.
