Gentle hills and walking trails
The hills of the municipality of Teisendorf have been shaped by agriculture and farming traditions for centuries. They are well suited to walks and easy hikes. If you would like to spend time outdoors, the setting is different from that of an excursion focused mainly on a particular museum or event. The landscape also reflects the character of the town: gentle terrain and a long agricultural heritage take centre stage here.
A free hiking map and useful hiking tips are available from the Teisendorf Tourist Information Office. The Tourist Information Office also offers free guided hikes from July to September. If a guided hike is important for your travel dates, check availability in advance. This will help you choose between a self-planned hike with a map and tips and the seasonal guided tour offering.
Cycling routes and getting here
The Mozart Cycle Route, the Lake Constance–Königssee Cycle Route and the Via Julia pass through Teisendorf.
The Teisendorf Beer Hiking Trail starts in the town centre at the Wieninger Brewery. Teisendorf can be reached by bus or train. Check timetables and connections for your specific travel date.
Geology, history and local traditions
The Eichelgarten Geopark features information about the effects of the ice ages on the Rupertiwinkel, the structure and composition of rocks, and the formation of the Alps and the processes behind it. All the geopark exhibits were found within the municipal area of Teisendorf.
Local history can also be explored through specific themes: the Holy Cross Chapel in Holzhausen, a district of the municipality of Teisendorf, was first mentioned in 1424. Maypoles are erected in Teisendorf every year around 1 May. The festivities include brass band music, a snack, beer and convivial gatherings. Another historical theme is presented at the Eisenreich Achthal Mining Museum in the wider area around the destination. A show mine explores the working methods and way of life of miners in earlier times, including the hardships and dangers they faced.
Berchtesgadener Land as a wider setting
Beyond Teisendorf, the wider destination of Berchtesgadener Land offers further landscape and cultural context. The region stretches from the gently rolling Rupertiwinkel in the north to Berchtesgaden National Park on the border with Austria; to the south, it includes high Alpine mountain scenery and the natural surroundings of Lake Königssee.
One excursion destination within this wider region is the visitor centre at the Grassl Distillery in Unterau. During opening hours, a signposted tour takes visitors through the distillation of gentian, juniper, gin and masterwort; a free tasting of 40 specialities is also offered. Check the opening hours if you plan to visit.
