For winter days in Bayerisch Gmain, there are various outdoor activities to choose from: cross-country skiing on three trails, a path that is accessible year-round and cleared in winter, circular routes through gorge and stream landscapes, and a toboggan run that is prepared depending on snow conditions. The options therefore range from cross-country skiing and walking and scenic trails to tobogganing. When planning a stay, it is helpful to consider the type of route, the activity you want to do, and snow conditions separately.

Cross-country skiing: three trails and 11 kilometres

Bayerisch Gmain has three cross-country ski trails totalling 11 kilometres. They are not directly connected; to switch between them, you have to cross the road on foot. The total figure therefore describes the combined length of the three trails, not a directly connected trail network. When there is sufficient snow, you can ski the trails using either freestyle or classic technique. For planning, two points should be considered separately: the route when switching between trails and whether there is enough snow for your preferred technique.

A path cleared in winter for families

The Wald-Idyll Path on Maisweg is suitable for children, pushchairs and balance bikes. It is accessible year-round in all weather and is also cleared in winter. This makes it quite different from the snow-dependent cross-country skiing options: the path is accessible all year, while the ski trails require sufficient snow. If you are travelling with a pushchair or balance bike, you can include the path as a separate option in your day’s plans.

Gorge, stream and nature playground

The landscapes along the trails also differ. The Alpgarten circular hiking trail leads through the deep gorge of the Alpgartengraben in the Predigtstuhl massif of the Lattengebirge. The Speik circular trail follows a mountain stream and passes small ravines, waterfalls and pools. A pool is a basin in a stream. You can therefore choose between the deep gorge at the Alpgartengraben and the route alongside the stream on the Speik circular trail.

Along the SalzAlpenTour, there is a nature playground at a broad, shallow stretch of the Weißbach. Younger hikers can splash about and build dams there. The focus here is on the water and playing by the bank; the playground is therefore a different kind of destination from the gorges and waterfalls along the circular trails. For families, the comparison with the Wald-Idyll Path is also clear: pushchairs and balance bikes are explicitly included there, while at the Weißbach the focus is on splashing about and building dams for younger hikers.

Tobogganing and snow conditions

The Alpgarten toboggan run is at Alpentalstraße 6 in Bayerisch Gmain and is prepared during the winter months depending on snow conditions. If tobogganing is important to your stay, check the current conditions before your visit. The snow-dependent preparation sets the toboggan run apart from the Wald-Idyll Path, which is accessible year-round in all weather and cleared in winter.
