Geographical location
Schonach lies in a high valley at an elevation of between 600 and 1,164 meters; the town center is located at 850 meters.
Nature
The landscape around Schonach includes forests, meadows, pastureland, heathland, and moors. The rock formations of the Triberg granite massif have given rise to larger and smaller waterfalls along the Gutach, Schonach, Elz, and Alpirsbach rivers.
The Rohrhardsberg is part of the Natura 2000 network, which protects rare and endangered species as well as valuable habitats. In 2024, the U(h)rwaldpfad trail on the Rohrhardsberg was nominated as Germany’s most beautiful hiking trail.
