Furtwangen in the Black Forest: Hotels and Accommodation

Winter

The Bregtallift ski lift is located on Staatsberg in Furtwangen. The network of cross-country ski trails at Martinskapelle includes loop trails leading from Martinskapelle via Rohrhardsberg to Brend. Hiking trails and cross-country ski trails are right outside the door of the Höhen gasthaus Kolmenhof at the source of the Breg and the historic St. Martin's Chapel. Martinskapelle is one of the oldest surviving buildings in Furtwangen; it was placed under heritage protection in 1951.

The easy Martinskapelle–Danube Spring–Brend circular trail is around 5.56 km long and takes approximately 1 hour and 35 minutes. It passes the Günterfelsen rock formations and the source of the Breg, offering views towards Feldberg and the Rhine Valley.

Nature

The Breg, the longest headstream of the Danube, rises in Furtwangen. The source of the Breg is located in the Martinskapelle area of Furtwangen.

The Günterfelsen rock formations consist of large, moss-covered granite rocks in Furtwangen's wooded Brend area. Brend is considered a popular excursion destination; the summit offers panoramic views.

The Brend Tower was built in 1905 and rises just under 20 metres above the summit. It is freely accessible; an inn is located right next to it, with a Naturfreundehaus nearby. The Brend Naturfreundehaus is situated directly on the Pforzheim–Basel Westweg trail and offers regional specialities.

Culture

The KIRNER-Kabinett displays around 160 works, including pencil and ink sketches by the Furtwangen genre painter Johann Baptist Kirner. The Museum Gasthaus Arche presents local history across four floors, with historical household furnishings and an old stable with feeding passages. The collection of the German Clock Museum comprises more than 8,000 objects from around the world.

In Neukirch, a district of Furtwangen, St. Andrew's Church features Baroque furnishings and important works by Adam Winterhalder and Matthias Faller.

The Rotenbauernhof is a demonstration distillery and offers guided tours that may be suitable for groups and families.

The Hexenloch Mill is located between St. Märgen and Furtwangen. It was built as a sawmill in 1825; its working up-and-down and circular saws, powered by its water wheel, have been preserved. The mill sells Black Forest food products and spirits, including ham, farmers' sausage, honey, berry wines and brandies. The restaurant serves Black Forest specialities and homemade cakes, including Black Forest gateau.
