Discover Vöhrenbach: Linachtalsperre Dam and Fasnet
Accommodation in Vöhrenbach
Vöhrenbach offers several reasons to choose this destination: an unusual dam with a history of engineering, a vibrant Fasnet tradition, and opportunities for cycling and swimming. When looking for accommodation, you can consider which of these themes you would like to shape your stay most.
Engineering history at the Linachtalsperre Dam
The Linachtalsperre Dam is located within the Vöhrenbach municipal area. It is Germany’s first and only multiple-arch dam with an inclined upstream face. Together with its associated power station, it forms a unique technical museum. The dam was built from 1922 to 1925; the town of Vöhrenbach renovated and reactivated it from 2005 to 2007. It is Germany’s only multiple-arch dam made of reinforced concrete and a cultural heritage monument of national significance.
Its design and history give a visit a clear focus: this is about an engineering structure and its development, not just the view of a dam. The Uhrmacherhäusle (watchmaker’s house) also adds a history of craftsmanship to the historic townscape. Watchmaker Elias Dolt built it in 1725; it is a restored, typical example of a small Black Forest craftsman’s house made of wood.
Circular routes and insights into hydropower
The interactive audio adventure tour “The Rescue of the Linachtalsperre” follows a circular route. It starts and ends on the top of the dam and takes around two to two and a half hours. This gives you a specific time frame for the outing. When the reservoir is full, visitors can walk along the top of the dam.
The hydropower educational trail offers a different perspective: it starts at the power station building and goes around the reservoir. Information panels explain this rare engineering structure. The two activities therefore differ in how they present the site: the audio adventure tour combines a circular route with an interactive story, while the trail uses panels to provide information about the structure.
Fasnet and the regional cultural setting
The centuries-old Vöhrenbach Fasnet tradition includes cap evenings and the Grand Monday parade. It continues to shape Fasnet in Vöhrenbach today. If you are planning your stay specifically around Fasnet, check the current event dates in advance.
The Schwarzwald-Baar district forms part of the wider cultural setting: in December 2014, the Swabian-Alemannic Fasnet in the Schwarzwald-Baar district was included in Germany’s nationwide UNESCO Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Carnival in the district lasts six days, from Schmotziger Dunnschtig (Fat Thursday) to Ash Wednesday.
Cycling and the outdoor swimming pool
The flat Bregtal cycling route is suitable for families and connects with the Danube Cycle Path. Its flat terrain and connection to the Danube Cycle Path characterize the Bregtal cycling route. This means you can consider cycling as a separate activity alongside trips to the Linachtalsperre Dam.
The solar-heated swimming pool in Vöhrenbach has a 50-metre pool and a children’s paddling pool. The outdoor pool also has a waterslide and two diving towers with 1-metre and 3-metre boards. The outdoor pool is open seasonally, so check the current season before your visit.
Choosing the themes that shape your stay
Fasnet adds a cultural dimension for which specific event dates are important. Cycling and the outdoor pool complement these themes: the Bregtal cycling route is characterized by its flat terrain and connection to the Danube Route, while visits to the outdoor pool should be planned around its seasonal opening. You can choose accordingly, depending on whether engineering history, tradition or outdoor activities are your main priorities.
