Culture

The former Collégiale Notre-Dame, now the parish church of Notre-Dame and Saint-Nicolas, was built from 1705 to 1718 according to Vauban's plans. This construction period falls within the first quarter of the 18th century. By decree of October 14, 1931, the former Collégiale Notre-Dame, Saint-Nicolas was classified as a historic monument.

The Vauban town walls of Briançon extend for almost three kilometers and are freely accessible all year round. Access to Fort des Salettes, on the other hand, is regulated and only possible as part of a guided tour.

Fort du Château was transformed from an old castle into a genuine fort in the 19th century. It can be visited as part of a guided discovery tour with Briançon's cultural and heritage guides. A visit to Fort du Château offers a panoramic view of the Briançonnais valleys, the forts that are part of the World Heritage Site, and the town.

The Magasin à poudre du Château is a well-preserved powder magazine built between 1692 and 1700 and is open to visitors. The Centre d'Art Contemporain plans two group exhibitions each year, one in summer and one in winter, each lasting approximately three months.

The Via Guisane runs between Briançon and Chantemerle through the forest and along canals and the Guisane River. Route “53 - Le Tour des Forts de Briançon” leads around Briançon, passing near numerous Vauban forts. The Chemin de ronde offers an impressive panorama.

Getting there

Briançon can be reached by road via the N94 from Italy or Gap, via the A51 from Marseille, and via the D1091 from Grenoble.
