Numerous hikes lead from the centre of Rimplas via the Vacheries de Rimplas or the Millefonds lakes to Mont Giraud at an altitude of 2,606 metres. The two-day Traversée du Valdeblore passes through eight villages, including Rimplas.
Culture
The medieval village of Rimplas features stepped, paved lanes, old stairways and vaulted passageways. A flowing water channel runs through the streets of Rimplas. Pink façades and marble walls painted with trompe-l’œil designs characterise the village.
The Galerie de sculptures de Serge Doglio invites visitors to view Serge Doglio’s iron sculptures in the former cable-car station of Fort de Rimplas on the Maginot Line.
History
Construction of the Fort de la Madeleine began in 1928. It is France’s first fort on the Maginot Line and offers families immersive activities such as an escape room, virtual reality, an audio guide and an exhibition. Built between 1930 and 1937, the Fort Maginot de la Frassinéa supported this fort and enhanced the defence of the Tinée Valley by blocking the road below Saint-Sauveur-sur-Tinée. Free guided tours are offered there by prior reservation.
Traditional home production in Rimplas historically included wine, potatoes from the late 18th century onwards, walnuts and chestnuts.
