Nature and trails

The 19-kilometre cycle path 1149 connects Písek with Zvíkovské Podhradí and Zvíkov. Route 1225 follows the Sedláček Trail from Písek via the footbridge at the gas pipeline and Varvažov to Orlík; its length is stated as 31 kilometres. For shared use by hikers and cyclists, a 35-kilometre cycle route numbered 1225 is also designated along the Sedláček Trail.

The Písecko–Blatensko–Strakonicko–Vodňansko tourism area promotes the Sedláček Trail for hiking and cycling. The Písek Mountains have been protected since 1973 and support hiking and cycling tours.

The V Obouch natural monument provides nesting habitat for many bird species and is home to a permanent population of Eurasian otters. Němec Pond has a small island that can be reached on foot via a footbridge.

Archaeological finds identify the island in Němec Pond as the site of a fortified settlement from the 15th century. At 633 metres, Velký Mehelník is the highest peak of the Písek Mountains.

The Jarník lookout tower has a 35-metre-high viewing platform with views towards the Šumava Mountains in South Bohemia, the Novohradské Mountains, Kleť, the Písek region and Brdy. The Sedláček Trail runs as a 25-kilometre hiking route along the Otava from Písek to Zvíkov.

Water and culture

The Orlík Reservoir offers boat trips, water sports, fishing and summer recreation. Divers can search there for the flooded church in the former village of Těchnice, which lies about 60 metres below the water's surface.

Zvíkov Castle is an early Gothic castle above the confluence of the Otava and Vltava. Areas open to visitors include the royal palace, the royal bedchambers, the Knights' Hall, the Crown Hall and the Chapel of St Wenceslas.

A boat trip from Zvíkov Castle leads to the nearby Orlík Chateau. Milevsko Monastery can be reached by car, by train followed by a three-kilometre marked footpath, or via cycle route 1059.

Culture and history

The fishing and fish exhibition at the Prácheňské Museum displays fish from Czech rivers, ponds and reservoirs in several aquariums. The Kamenný most in Písek is the oldest surviving stone bridge in Bohemia and an important medieval monument.

Tours of Milevsko Monastery include the Basilica of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary, the abbey chapel, the cloister garth, the cemetery Church of St Giles, former prelature rooms and the Baroque library in the Latin school. Milevsko Monastery is considered the oldest and largest monastery in South Bohemia and the site of the region's only Romanesque basilica.

Vráž Spa is located in a Neo-Gothic chateau in the Otava Valley, surrounded by an English landscape park and woodland. Vráž Chateau and the English park together form a cultural heritage site.

Local places and culinary delights

Crocodile ZOO Protivín can be reached by train or bus; a local car park is available on site.

Beer tasting or purchasing beer at Čížová Brewery is possible directly at the brewery by prior appointment. The local beers from Čížová are neither filtered nor pasteurised.

Beer has been brewed in the building of Čížová Chateau since 1629.
