Bystrá nad Jizerou: Wooden Bridge, Trails and Village Life

The Wooden Bridge: A Monument and a Link

The covered wooden bridge, known as the “bysterský dřevěný most,” was built in 1922. It is a suspension bridge and a technical cultural monument; at the border with Benešov u Semil, it spans the Jizera River. The bridge is once again open to the public and serves as an important transport link for this relatively remote municipality. Its year of construction and continued function therefore go hand in hand: the bridge is both a historic structure and part of the local transport network. The municipality describes it as the only surviving and operational bridge of its kind in Europe.

Trails and Scenery Around Bystrá

A green-marked hiking trail passes through Bystrá nad Jizerou and runs between Semily, Jilemnice and Vrchlabí. Cycle Route No. 4174 also passes through the village, connecting the Bohemian Paradise with the Krkonoše Mountains. Before setting out, check the current trail markings and route, as these and route conditions may change. These connections offer different ways to include the village in your plans on foot or by bike, without implying any particular walking or cycling time.

The hills and slopes around Bystrá offer views of the ridges of the Krkonoše Mountains as well as Ještěd, Kozákov and Strážník. The hill of Strážník is nearby; its area is a national natural monument. On its western side lies a melaphyre rock city. Other destinations in the surrounding area include the Bozkov Dolomite Caves, the Bohemian Paradise and the Krkonoše Mountains. The rock city is on Strážník; the hiking trail and cycle route follow different connections through Bystrá.

Chalets and Village History

The village landscape includes numerous well-preserved chalets from the 19th century. Typical of the Krkonoše foothills, most are still inhabited. They represent a different aspect of the village’s history from the single wooden bridge: here, a widespread historic building style shapes the built environment. The first written mention of Bystrá nad Jizerou dates to 1320. This date refers to the written mention of the village, not to its founding.

Remembrance and Community Life

After the First World War, the sports club erected a war memorial, where commemorations are held annually. The volunteer fire brigade is also closely connected with village life: founded in 1893, it is still active and plays an important role in cultural life. The former fire station, built in 1907, houses an exhibition on the history of the local fire brigade. If you plan to visit the exhibition, check in advance when visits are possible.

In the 1970s, residents built a cultural centre, which remains the hub of social life in the village. Clubs and the municipal administration organise football, firefighting and other sports competitions. Cultural activities include balls, a children’s carnival, a children’s day, theatre performances and the burning of the witches. Horse Riding at the Ranch
