Culture and Local Character

In Bystrá nad Jizerou stands the “bysterský dřevěný most,” a wooden suspension bridge built in 1922 and a cultural monument. It is considered the only surviving and functioning bridge of its kind in Europe.

The first fire station, built in 1907, houses an exhibition on the history of the local volunteer fire brigade. Memorial ceremonies are held annually at the war memorial. The local character is also shaped by numerous typical foothill houses from the 19th century: many are still inhabited, while others serve as holiday accommodation.

Bystrá nad Jizerou’s cultural program includes balls, a children’s carnival, Children’s Day, theatrical performances, and the burning of the witches. The local events calendar also includes football tournaments, firefighting sports competitions, and other sporting events.

Landscape and Trails

The hills and slopes around Bystrá nad Jizerou offer views of the ridges of the Krkonoše Mountains, as well as Ještěd, Kozákov, and Strážník. Strážník is a mountain in the vicinity of Bystrá nad Jizerou; the nearby hill is known for its occurrence of star quartz, and its area is a national nature monument.

Tábor, Přední Žalý, and Zadní Žalý are also mountains in the area around Bystrá nad Jizerou. In the wider region are the ruins of Spalona Strażnica, as well as the churches of Valdštejn and Lázně.

A green-marked hiking trail passes through Bystrá nad Jizerou and runs from Semily via Jilemnice to Vrchlabí. For cyclists, Route 4174 connects the Bohemian Paradise with the Krkonoše Mountains.

Activities

Ranch Bystra offers riding lessons for beginners and advanced riders. The ranch includes a 20-hectare enclosed area with a riding trail through the forest and across pastures with livestock.
