Bregenz between the Rhine Delta and Culture
Accommodation in Bregenz District
Anyone looking for accommodation in Bregenz can organize their stay around two clear focal points: protected landscapes on Lake Constance and museums, workshops and cultural venues in Bregenz and the surrounding towns. The Rhine Delta, the Mehrerau lakeshore, Pfänder and a diverse museum landscape offer different starting points for interests in nature, culture and physical activity.
Nature between the lakeshore and protected areas
The Rhine Delta Nature Reserve is the largest wetland on Lake Constance. It covers more than 2,000 hectares, two thirds of which are water. The area extends across Fußach, Gaißau, Hard and Höchst. The Rhine Delta is also designated as a Ramsar site and a Natura 2000 site.
The Mehrerau lakeshore – Bregenzerach estuary nature reserve is another specific nature destination in the area around Bregenz. It is located in Bregenz and Hard and covers 154.29 hectares. The Kojen-Moos Nature Reserve in Riefensberg has been protected since 1978.
Art, museums and regional history
Kunsthaus Bregenz was designed by Swiss architect Peter Zumthor, built from 1994 to 1997 and opened in 1997. The Bregenz Festival offers behind-the-scenes tours of the theater operation, during which visitors can get to know the lake stage.
The Women's Museum Hittisau focuses on women-specific topics in cultural, social, art and architectural history. The exhibitions have regional and international connections. In addition, special guided tours, lectures, workshops, concerts, readings, seminars and film screenings are offered. The journey can be planned precisely: The museum can be reached from the “Hittisau Gemeindehaus” stop by bus routes 820, 860 and 891; from there it is a two-minute walk.
The Egg Museum was founded as a local history museum in 1904 and reopened in 1988, after the collections had been stored for several years, in the former school and community building dating from 1899. The “Egg in Felder's Time” route is offered in cooperation with the Egg Museum. Along the route, a backpack with helpful materials and audio guides enhances the experience.
In Hard, the Mittelweiherburg Textile Printing Museum presents block carving, textile hand printing and the social history of industrialization up to the 1930s of the 20th century. The museum is located in Hard. Mittelweiherburg was built around 1570 and became one of the cradles of the textile industry from 1794 onward. In Alberschwende, the Coseum – Alberschwende Local History Museum presents the region's rural domestic culture of the 18th and 19th centuries in furnished display settings with kitchens, living rooms and bedrooms.
Werkraum Bregenzerwald in Andelsbuch displays products from its member businesses. The 700 m² hall can be used as exhibition space as well as a venue for concerts and lectures. The Juppenwerkstatt Riefensberg is a demonstration workshop with a museum. Only there is the exclusive fabric for the Bregenzerwald women's traditional costume produced.
The Angelika Kauffmann Museum in Schwarzenberg offers a tour through the house. It provides direct insights into the rural domestic and everyday culture of the 19th century. The Pfänderbahn Museum displays exhibits and information about nature, the company and technology on Pfänder, as well as about the history, technical components and route of the railway.
Routes for cycling, hiking and nature experiences
The easy “Rhine delta tour” cycle route begins at the lakeside promenade in Bregenz, leads via Hard and Fußach into the Rhine Delta and runs there along a marked cycle path through the Rhine Delta Nature Reserve. There is also a dense network of hiking and cycle paths around Pfänder.
The Georunde Rindberg trail in Sibratsgfäll makes the power of nature visible, tangible and experiential at eight stations.
