Hittisau offers various cross-country skiing options as well as a diverse selection of cultural attractions and trails. If you are looking for accommodation for a stay combining cross-country skiing and local culture, you can choose between a cross-border trail, a sunny village loop, museums, memorial sites and various themed trails. Cross-country skiing and culture represent separate areas of focus: the trail belongs to winter sports, while the museum, memorial site and church belong to local culture.

Cross-country skiing between the village trail and the Grenzlandloipe

Two different forms of cross-country skiing are central to winter sports in Hittisau. The Grenzlandloipe runs between Hittisau and Balderschwang for more than 70 km. It therefore crosses the border and differs significantly from the sunny village loop in Hittisau. In addition, Hittisau has a sunny village loop for cross-country skiing. It offers a second option clearly associated with the village. This does not imply any information about current snow conditions, openings or specific grooming.

Women's Museum, DENK.MAL and parish church

The Hittisau Women's Museum is the first and only women's museum in Austria. It presents exhibitions on the history and culture of women. Its accompanying programme includes lectures, concerts, symposia, guided tours and school workshops. The museum visit can therefore be combined with various cultural formats.

DENK.MAL in Hittisau focuses on something different. It is a memorial site for people who lost their lives through wars and systematic killings under National Socialism. DENK.MAL is presented as a contemporary memorial site that points to the past and invites reflection and discussion. Hittisau Parish Church was consecrated in 1845 to the Three Holy Kings. In addition, Hittisau is one of the villages in the region through which specially designated “Umgang” trails run.

Trails by the water and on the Rotenberg

The Hittisau Water Trail begins at the village fountain and runs along the Bolgenach to the Engenloch Gorge with its overhanging rock formations. It also leads to the approximately 300-year-old KommabrĂĽcke, which is described as the oldest covered wooden bridge in the country.

The themed trail on the Rotenberg comprises 20 stations. The Rotenberg circular hike begins at the village square in Hittisau and complements the themed trail on the Rotenberg. The Hittisau circular trail passes directly by the Hittisau Alpine Dairy Museum. When choosing your daily destinations, you can therefore distinguish between a water trail, a circular hike, a themed trail and a circular trail that passes a museum.

Regional specialities in Hittisau

The local character also includes the dairy shop of the Hittisau dairy. It offers mountain cheese from its own maturing cellar as well as numerous other regional specialities.
