Hochfilzen offers direct access to the Buchensteinwand ski area. For a winter getaway, this is a clear connection to alpine skiing. In addition, freshly groomed cross-country trails run daily from Hochfilzen to St. Ulrich am Pillersee and the neighbouring Pinzgau region. Grooming is seasonal. A guest biathlon is also scheduled for winter on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays between December and Easter.

Winter Activities and Planning

The activities follow different schedules: seasonal grooming is key for the trails, while the guest biathlon also depends on the day of the week. The ski area’s lifts also operate seasonally. Before travelling, check the current trail conditions and the exact times for the guest biathlon. This will help you plan activities that suit your travel dates, rather than assuming that the operating conditions for one activity apply to another.

Hochfilzen lies on a mountain-ringed plateau at an altitude of 1,000 metres. This altitude describes the setting of the village; each winter activity has its own connection to the area: access leads to the Buchensteinwand ski area, while the cross-country trails run to St. Ulrich am Pillersee and the neighbouring Pinzgau region. If you are looking for a ski hotel in Hochfilzen, these different activities can give you an initial idea of what you would like to focus on during your stay.

Biathlon and Pilgrimage Routes

Biathlon in Hochfilzen is associated with more than just the guest biathlon scheduled for the winter season. The Biathlon World Championships Trail provides information about the sport and offers digital extra content as well as a quiz rally with a personal World Championships medal. The digital features may be updated; if you are planning your trip specifically around this activity, check the latest information in advance. The trail combines information about the sport with a quiz rally, while the guest biathlon is an event scheduled for specific times.

Hochfilzen also lies on the signposted Pinzgau Marienweg pilgrimage route, which has been in existence since 2012. One of its four route options passes via Spielberghaus and Hochfilzen to Maria Kirchental. For travellers who would also like to include a pilgrimage route in their plans alongside winter sports, this option shows how the village connects to the Marienweg. Not all four options pass through the same places; the route via Spielberghaus is one of them.

Parish Church and Getting Around the Village

The Catholic parish church of Our Lady of the Snows was rebuilt in the Baroque style in 1746 and substantially enlarged in 1961. It is protected as a listed monument under an ordinance in the Tyrolean monument register dated 23 June 2026. As access may change, it is advisable to check before visiting. The church’s history also gives it a distinct timeline: the Baroque reconstruction and the major enlargement took place more than two centuries apart.

The railway station is also a useful landmark for finding your way around the village: the parish church of Maria Schnee is about a ten-minute walk from there. Check the walking time before your visit. This gives you a specific reference for the route between the station and the church; it should not be taken as the walking time to accommodation or to any of the winter activities.
