Historic Traces in the Village

Historically, Schwendt was a small trading village on an important pass route descending to Kössen, via the Klobenstein Pass towards Bavaria. Mining was carried out in Schwendt and the surrounding areas during the Middle Ages. Lead and iron were found there; mining was discontinued towards the end of the 19th century. The time span therefore extends from the Middle Ages through the 17th century to the late 19th century. Trade and mining represent different historical functions of Schwendt: connection via the pass route and the extraction of lead and iron. The parish church of St. Aegidius is impressive with its Gothic history, valuable frescoes and Baroque works of art. The church’s bell tower dates from 1686. A large mural is located above the church portal. Another prominent attraction is the “Lederer Herrgott”, a crucifix more than three meters high dating from the 17th century.
