Westendorf: Winter Access, Trails and Local History

The winter activities in Westendorf have different starting points. Depending on the destination, your stay begins in the village, in the Windau Valley or at a station of the Alpenrosenbahn.

Winter Activities in Westendorf and the Windau Valley

From December to April, Westendorf offers direct access to SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser – Brixental and the KitzSki region. In addition, there are 13 km of groomed cross-country ski trails and winter hiking trails, including the route to Lake Salvensee. This means that, alongside skiing, cross-country skiing and longer walks through the winter landscape are also available.

The Windau Valley is home to a natural toboggan run. Hiking, cycling and mountain biking, winter hiking, as well as snowshoe and ski tours are also possible there. The valley therefore offers activities for different seasons and different forms of exercise; the natural toboggan run complements the trails and tours with a winter activity of its own.

Lift Access, Talkaser and Mountain Trails

The Alpenrosenbahn I & II 6-seater gondola lift takes visitors directly to Talkaser at 1,770 m. The Alpinolino adventure world is located there, with the “Animal Puzzle Tour”, “Spoggolino Ball Track” and “Woodworm Trail” stations. The adventure world is therefore situated in the mountain area and connected to the lift access.

From the Alpinorama viewpoint, the panoramic view extends across the Brixental Valley to the Hohe Tauern. The Brechhorn Tour starts at the mountain station of the Alpenrosenbahn in Westendorf.

No specific duration or difficulty of the tour is given.

Trails with Different Starting Points

From the middle station of the Alpenrosenbahn, the Alpinolino Woodworm Trail passes numerous mountain inns before reaching the valley station in Westendorf.

The Wohlfühlweg, by contrast, begins at the Westendorf tourist office and follows Schulgasse along a field path to the Bichling district. Its starting point is therefore in the village area and not at a station of the Alpenrosenbahn.

The Westendorf circular hiking trail runs as a panoramic circular trail through meadows and forests. It passes old farmhouses, numerous hamlets and many sights such as chapels, bread ovens and fountains. It is also suitable for Nordic walking and running. The route therefore combines natural and cultural landscapes with additional forms of exercise.

Local History as an Additional Point of Interest

St. Nicholas Church in Westendorf is first mentioned in documents from 1320. The Gothic church was remodeled in 1771 by Andre Huber. Some frescoes preserved to this day date from 1774 and were created by the painter Matthias Kirchner. The church adds a cultural and historical destination in the village to the winter activities and provides a different focus from the trails in the mountain area or the Windau Valley.

Based on these winter activities, Westendorf cannot reliably be classified as a destination for beginners or advanced skiers. Specific distances to accommodations, transfer times or facilities of individual hotels have not been established.
