Burgenland between nature, culture and enjoyment

Burgenland combines culture, nature, wine, health and sport. When choosing accommodation in Burgenland, you can therefore tailor your stay to very different interests: to landscape experiences around Lake Neusiedl, cycling tours, historic places, culinary routes or a visit to the spa.

Nature experiences at Lake Neusiedl

Neusiedler See–Seewinkel National Park offers themed tours all year round. These include guided tours through the Seewinkel landscape. The tours last around three hours, so you can factor in a clearly defined period when planning your day. Experiences in Burgenland’s nature parks also include guided hikes with trained nature guides and canoe trips through idyllic river landscapes.

A distinctive viewpoint is the border tower at Illmitzer Sandeck. From there, you can look out over the imposing reed belt of the national park’s nature zone. On a visit, there is also the opportunity to see white donkeys. The birdlife is another defining natural feature of the region: more than 340 different bird species have been recorded in the area around Lake Neusiedl. Over the past decades, the great bustard has been saved from extinction through cooperation between nature conservation and agriculture.

Cycling and excursions on the water

Burgenland offers cyclists a variety of route profiles. The National Park Cycle Route is a cross-border circular route through Neusiedler See–Seewinkel National Park and runs along the Einser Canal on the Hungarian side. The B10 Lake Neusiedl Cycle Route is suitable for both family tours and athletic cyclists. Depending on your group and requirements, you can therefore choose between a shared outing and a more sporting day stage.

There are two children’s playgrounds at Illmitz lido. Next to the lido is a small harbour where bicycle ferries dock. These two places can therefore be planned as specific components of an excursion on the water, without this implying a particular accommodation location or a fixed connection between individual destinations. The tourist information office in Eisenstadt provides hiking and cycling maps, helping you find your bearings when selecting suitable routes.

Cultural history between the lake and Eisenstadt

The Fertő/Lake Neusiedl cultural landscape has been a meeting place for different cultures for eight millennia. Lake Neusiedl and its cultural landscape have been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2001.

In Rust, the historic old town is protected as an ensemble. Eisenstadt is home to the Haydn House, the former residence of composer Joseph Haydn. Original furniture from Haydn’s era is on display in the Haydn House. Another cultural site is Esterházy Palace, which is now a museum. Wine, regional cuisine and culinary routes

Burgenland can also be explored through its wine and culinary offerings. Wine and culinary events take place all year round from north to south. During Martiniloben, wine lovers go from cellar to cellar to taste, assess and name young wines.

The “Pannonian Enjoyment” culinary route passes through a total of 11 villages and towns in southern Burgenland. It combines impressive nature, cultural treasures and culinary highlights and can be explored by car. The Burgenland Culinary Route includes around 200 businesses from Lake Neusiedl to southern Burgenland; guided tours of businesses are also available. When looking for accommodation, you can therefore decide in advance whether a particular landscape, a cultural stop or a culinary route should be the focus of your days.

In southern Burgenland, the “Enjoyment in Uhudlerland” route complements the offering. Typical vintner’s snacks are served there. Along the route, regional agriculture and traditional crafts are also presented as part of southern Burgenland’s culinary diversity. The route therefore makes not only wine and food, but also the regional themes associated with them, part of an excursion.

Thermal water and regional orientation

For relaxation, there is the AVITA spa in Bad Tatzmannsdorf in southern Burgenland. It has more than 2,000 m² of water surface across 15 different thermal-water pools.
