Mattersburg offers a variety of attractions for a trip: historic buildings in the town, diverse cultural venues, nature park landscapes, as well as cycling and hiking trails.

Historic Buildings in Mattersburg

The parish church in Mattersburg is a Gothic church dedicated to Saint Martin. It was first mentioned in 1390. The railway viaduct in Mattersburg provides a different focal point and is considered a landmark of the town. It consists of 20 pillars and is 250 meters long.

History is also presented in Mattersburg at the 70er Haus der Geschichten. Local historical accounts are the focus there. The Mattersburg Cultural Center was built in 1976 according to plans by architect Herwig Udo Graf in the Brutalist style.

Cultural Venues and Event Spaces

The Mattersburg Cultural Center hosts cabaret performances, concerts and theater productions. A multifunctional foyer is available there for exhibitions and receptions. Overall, the cultural center provides more than 1,000 square meters of event space and can accommodate up to 700 people. The Bauermühle Mattersburg also has rooms for concerts, readings and exhibitions. Tours of the Bauermühle are possible by individual appointment.

Another historic and cultural point of interest is located in Schattendorf. The Schuh-Mühle houses the permanent exhibition “The Shots of Schattendorf.” The building was first constructed in 1498 and operated as a grain mill until 1970. The history of the Wiesen festivals also goes back a long way: the organization of an international jazz festival began in 1976. The program later expanded from jazz and reggae to world music, rock, punk, electronic music and hip-hop. This development describes the range of musical genres documented there, without presupposing a current event or present-day program.

Rosalia-Kogelberg Nature Park and Cycle Paths

Rosalia-Kogelberg Nature Park encompasses two nature reserves and the Mattersburger Hügelland Natura 2000 bird sanctuary. Particularly protected bird species breed in the Rohrbacher Teichwiesen wetlands, including black-crowned night herons, western marsh harriers, little bitterns, spotted crakes and white storks.

Several routes with different designs are available for cycling. The B32 Rosalia Cycle Route is a 58-kilometer circular route through Rosalia-Kogelberg Nature Park. The B33 Hexenhügel Cycle Route runs from Mattersburg via Sigleß to Zillingtal and connects the B32 Rosalia Cycle Route with the B11 Leitha Cycle Route. The MTB Forchtenstein Castle route starts at the sports field in Forchtenstein.

Themed Trails and Regional Destinations

There are also clearly distinct areas of focus for walking. The Kultur.Geschichten.Weg in Schattendorf is a roughly 2.5-kilometer circular trail leading to sites and attractions of cultural and historical interest. The Archäologie.Wander.Weg Schattendorf is a 7-kilometer hike in and around Schattendorf, along which archaeological sites can be visited.

The Province of Burgenland describes Forchtenstein Castle as the cultural ambassador of the Mattersburg district. It offers exhibitions, various guided tours and family events. For culinary enjoyment and landscapes, the Rosalia Culinary Tour leads through Rosalia-Kogelberg Nature Park and the Rosalia DAC wine-growing region. In Bad Sauerbrunn, the Heiltherme bases its therapies and revitalizing treatments on naturally occurring therapeutic resources, including the sour spring and thermal spring, as well as carbon dioxide dry gas.
