Geographical setting

At an elevation of approximately 789 metres above sea level, Aquila is located in the Valle di Blenio, on the western slope of the Colma and on the left bank of the Brenno. As a locality, Aquila belongs to the municipality of Blenio in the Blenio district of Ticino.

Monte Amianto, Cima del Casletto and Bareta are located in the vicinity of Aquila. Pizzo Sorda lies in the surrounding area of Aquila.

Aquila is situated on the road from Biasca to Olivone and 19 km north of Biasca railway station on the Gotthard railway.

History

Aquila was first documented in 1196.

Historically, the former territory of Aquila comprised two exclaves. The larger of these included part of Lago di Luzzone.
