Franches-Montagnes is a district in the Swiss canton of Jura. The landscape forms a high plateau of around 200 km² in the Jura, with an average elevation of approximately 1,000 metres.

Nature

The landscape is gently rolling. Fir and spruce forests alternate with wooded pastures, meadows and agricultural areas; dry-stone walls separate the areas from one another.

Culture and History

Montfaucon is recorded as the first settlement of Franches-Montagnes, mentioned in 1139; Spiegelberg Castle was founded in the late 13th century. The name of the region is associated with a document from 1384 that granted the settlers exceptional freedoms.
