Brienz: Hotels and accommodation

Brienz is a municipality in the canton of Bern with a distinctive connection between lake and mountain. The settlement stretches from Lake Brienz through the village and hamlets to peaks over 2,900 metres in the Faulhorn and Rothorn areas.

Nature and seasons

Almost half of Brienz's 48.1 km² area is forested. More than a third consists of meadows, pastures and alpine farming areas. The climate is moderately alpine, characterised by warm summers and snowy winters.

Brienz Wildlife Park is located in the immediate vicinity of Brienz. The surrounding area also includes Iseltwald lido, Oltschiburg, Arnitriste and Gummhoren.

Culture and history

The history of Brienz dates back to 1146. Culturally, the village has long been associated with agriculture, fishing and shipping.

Woodcarving became established in Brienz from 1816 onwards. A woodcarving school followed in 1884, and a violin-making school in 1944.

Brienz is regarded as a centre for crafts and culture and preserves its traditional character.

Orientation

Brienz has a railway station; directly opposite, at the beginning of the village's woodcarving district and the lakeside promenade, is the Brienz Tourist Information office.
