Hökerum: Mogden, Vädersholm and local history
Accommodation in Hökerum
Hökerum offers several highlights for a stay: Lake Mogden and its walking trail, the archaeological remains of Vädersholm, and Södra Vings kyrka, with its history stretching back almost a thousand years. There is also a bathing spot with jetties and a café in a more than 100-year-old mill. These places offer different experiences—from a walk by the lake and historic sites to local food and refreshments.
Mogden: walking trail and bathing spot
Mogden runt is a 7.4-kilometre walking trail around Lake Mogden in Hökerum. The lake is a central feature of the area; the trail passes through attractive surroundings and includes several archaeological remains and sights. The circular route thus combines a specific walking distance with nature and cultural heritage.
The trail’s length gives you a concrete guide when planning a walk. The bathing spot at Mogden in Hökerum has jetties. This offers a different experience from the circular trail: the bathing spot is for spending time by the water, while Mogden runt is a route around the lake that also takes in archaeological traces and sights.
Vädersholm and its archaeological remains
The remains of Vädersholm lie on a headland on the southern shore of Lake Mogden. They date from a fortified manor complex from the 14th and 15th centuries. Today, three mounds are visible at the castle site. Archaeological finds from excavations in the 1940s indicate that Vädersholm was inhabited in the 14th and 15th centuries.
The mounds are the visible traces of the complex today; the finds add evidence of settlement at the time. This makes it possible to distinguish between what can be seen today and the historical interpretation, without presenting the archaeological interpretation as certain.
In Hökerum, signs to Vädersholm are posted from the cycle path or railway embankment. There is parking at the site, but no parking for buses. If you are planning a group trip, bear this difference in mind when arranging your journey.
Church, castle and local history
Södra Vings kyrka in Hökerum has a history stretching back almost a thousand years. Its features include decorative painted artwork and an unusual, well-preserved manorial gallery. A gallery is a raised area in the church interior. The paintings and the gallery are two distinct features that contribute to the church’s historic character.
Hökerums Slott is now a private residence. Collin Nutley’s film “Bröllop, begravning och dop” was filmed at the castle. The castle is therefore associated both with its current status as a residence and with a specific film production.
